Juneau airport runway fully reopened following small plane crash this morning

The Juneau International Airport closed part of its runway this morning for about four hours after a small plane crashed upon takeoff. No one was injured in the accident.

According to Alaska Seaplanes, Flight 501 was on takeoff at approximately 8:43 a.m. from Juneau to Skagway when the incident occurred. The six occupants – five passengers and the pilot – were uninjured and examined by Capital City Fire/Rescue. The aircraft involved was a Cessna 208B Grand Caravan with tail number N754KP. Alaska Seaplanes is working with the Federal Aviation Administration’s Flight Standards District Office in Juneau and the National Transportation Safety Board on the investigation to determine the potential cause of the accident.

Shortly after the incident, Juneau International Airport reopened part of the runway for limited smaller aircraft operations. Helicopter and float pond operations were also able to resume at that time. The rest of the runway remained closed in the morning; Alaska Airlines canceled a few flights due to the closure.

The Juneau airport reopened the entire runway at 12:20 p.m. today following a thorough cleanup, and jet traffic resumed. The airport advises air travelers to check with your airline for any delays.

The City and Borough of Juneau thanks partner agencies that helped to quickly resolve the incident.

Don’t miss your flight: Travelers are reminded to get to airport 2 hours ahead of flight

In order to not miss your flight, the Juneau International Airport reminds travelers to get to the airport two hours ahead of your scheduled departure time. This will leave you enough time to check in, go through TSA passenger screening, and get on your flight.

“We are seeing people arrive an hour or less before their flight and they run the risk of not getting through passenger screening early enough to make their flight. Airlines are leaving people behind; in some cases 20 or more passengers per flight have missed their flight because of not arriving early enough,” Airport Manager Patty Wahto says. “We recommend people arrive two hours in advance and save themselves the frustration.”

The airport is busy, Wahto says, with passenger numbers for the large carriers almost back to pre-pandemic travel numbers. As another reminder, passengers with first class flight tickets do not automatically get PreCheck screening service; that’s a paid service separate from your flight ticket.
