Juneau Voices Audio Walk launches March 4; public invited to virtual event

Juneau Voices Audio Walk is a series of location-specific, place-based sound installations featuring stories and memories told by Juneau residents who lived them. The sound installations are linked to 11 of the new Downtown Wayfinding and Interpretive Elements signs through QR codes, which will be available for listening starting March 4 at 4:30 p.m. Experienced as a sequential journey, the sound installations add up to a walk through the past with a spotlight on untold histories from Dzantikʼihéeni, Juneau. To celebrate Juneau Voices, the public is invited to an online launch party and to participate in a Parks & Recreation Juneau Voices Matching Game:

• Juneau Voices Online launch party is on March 4 at 4 p.m. on Facebook Live, organized by KTOO Public Media and CBJ. Ping Chong + Company artists and community facilitators Ryan Conarro and Lillian Petershoare, who led the Juneau Voices project, will emcee the online event. It will feature a short “making of” documentary by KTOO and words from contributing artists and cultural leaders, including X’unei Twitchell, Mike Sakarias, George Kuhar, and Sarah Campen, the lead creator of the Juneau Voices Story Box, the accompanying website of community stories. • Juneau Voices Matching Game is a DIY activity – available any time after March 4 at 4:30 p.m. – that will take families through Downtown Juneau and allow them to experience the diverse stories. Print out a Matching Game form, go to the different signs, listen to the stories, and match the storytellers to a story theme. Bring a completed Matching Game form to either the Juneau-Douglas City Museum or the Downtown Library to get a limited edition Juneau Voices bookmark while supplies last.
