Eaglecrest (USE2023 009 & CSP2023 0001)

Eaglecrest Ski Area is applying for a City Project Review & Conditional Use Permit (concurrently) to develop a number of amenities, including the following:

  • Gondola with base station, upper station, and supporting structures
  • “Summit House” warming hut
  • Construction access roads
  • Mountain bike trails
  • Two Upper Fish Creek bridge crossings (each approx. 40 feet in length)

The Planning Commission meets March 8, 2022, at 7 P.M. This meeting will be virtual and telephonic only, and will be to review an applications for a conditional use permit for a marijuana store, a conditional use permit for Sunny Slope Organic Farm, and the reconstruction of Harris Street.

Reconstruction of Harris Street starting at Harris and Fourth Street to the Gold and Seventh Street intersection (CSP2021 0007)

Proposed replacement of road base material, pavement, concrete sidewalks, concrete curbs, gutters, and underground water and sewer utilities. The goal is to separate the sanitary and storm sewers, reducing the load on treatment facilities and reduce outfall of untreated sewage into Gastineau Channel during wet weather events, and to update the above sections of road with newer infrastructure.

A Conditional Use Permit for Sunny Slope Organic Farm – Nursery, Landscaping, & Retail (USE2022 0003)

The applicant requests a Conditional Use Permit to continue services at their location. These services include: on-site retail, gardening classes, landscaping, and a nursery. In the future, they plan to offer classes on Composting, Seed Collecting, Plant Dividing, Tool Sharpening, Forcing Winter Bulbs, Succulent Wreath Making, and Seed Starting. Classes would be approximately 1.5 hours and accommodate six (6) to eight (8) students.

A Special Use Permit for a marijuana retail store with on-site consumption of edible marijuana products (USE2022 0001)

The applicant a Special Use Permit to continue operations as Blissful Awakenings. The previous owner received a modification to USE2016 0006 (USE2020 0016) to allow on-site consumption of edible marijuana products. This application is reviewed as a Marijuana Retail Facility with On-Site Consumption. The applicant is required to obtain a license for this from the State of Alaska Alcohol and Marijuana Control Office, and a license from the City and Borough of Juneau.

Revision to the Alternative Development Overlay District (AME2018 0004)

Revision to the proposed ordinance taking into account lot size and subdivisions, setbacks for corner lots, and defining exception categories. Since the Commission last saw this ordinance, it has been reviewed by the CBJ Law Department and Engineering & Public Works Department. Both reviews generated proposed changes.

Presidents’ Day Holiday Hours for Monday, February 21

Dimond Park will resume their regular schedule on Tuesday, February 22. Augustus Brown remains closed until Monday, March 7.

Augustus Brown Will be Closed for Maintenance from February 14 – March 6

The Augustus Brown Swimming Pool will be closed February 14 – March 6 to address several deferred maintenance projects. The facility will reopen to the public on Monday, March 7.

During the three-week closure, CBJ staff and contractors will complete repairs to the boiler and plumbing system, as well as minor plaster repairs in the lap pool. The Dimond Park Aquatic Center will remain open and a complete schedule can be found at JuneauPools.org.

More work to extend the life of the downtown pool is planned for the near future, including replacement of the boiler and an upgraded air handling system to improve ventilation and humidity control. A large portion of the facility’s roof was replaced in 2021. Planned renovations of the locker rooms, lobby, mechanical systems, and pool liner have been postponed due to high construction costs.
