Three Juneau Assembly seats and two School Board seats are on the ballot for the October 6 City and Borough of Juneau Regular Municipal Election, which is being conducted this year as a vote-by-mail election. The filing period to run for one of these seats opens 8 a.m. July 17 and closes 4:30 p.m. July 27.

In order to file for office, candidates must submit a Declaration of Candidacy Form with their Nomination Petition signed by at least 25 registered voters. Find those forms here. In addition, candidates must go to the Alaska Public Offices Commission website and electronically complete a Public Official Financial Disclosure Statement.

If you’re thinking about running for local office, plan to work for someone who is, or just want a crash course on how local government works, you should attend the free July 18 “How to Run for Local Office” Workshop. Learn what it’s like to serve on the Juneau Assembly and School Board, and hear directly from current and past elected officials.

The annual workshop – virtual only this year – is on Saturday, July 18, 9 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. It’s free and focuses on: what it’s like to serve on the Assembly and School Board, preparing to run, legal requirements for candidates, and campaign basics. Learn more and register for the workshop on the League of Women Voters of Juneau website. The workshop is also sponsored by the CBJ Clerk’s Office, Juneau Public Libraries, and the Juneau School District.

For more information, contact the Clerk’s Office at 586-5278 or [email protected]. You can also go to CBJ’s Elections page.
