Volunteers needed: ADA, Sister Cities, PRAC & other CBJ boards seek new members

February 25, 2020 – FYI, News

The City and Borough of Juneau is currently seeking applicants for a variety of volunteer boards and commissions. Individuals that serve on a board are part of the backbone of local government. In an effort to diversify membership on its boards and commissions, and to bring in a wide range of viewpoints and life experiences, the Juneau Assembly encourages all community members who have the time and interest to submit an application.

CBJ has more than 30 boards, commissions, committees, and task forces. One of them is the ADA Advisory Committee. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law 30 years ago. The law represents the country’s commitment to assuring people with disabilities equality of opportunity, full participation, independent living, and economic self-sufficiency. CBJ established the ADA committee to help carry out the goals and provisions of the law as it relates to CBJ. The committee seeks caring, dedicated citizens to apply and serve. The meetings take place once a month for one hour.

The Sister Cities Committee promotes and fosters cultural exchanges, international municipal cooperation, and bonds of friendship and understanding with Juneau’s established Sister Cities — Whitehorse, Canada; Vladivostok, Russia; and Kalibo, Philippines. An ideal candidate for this committee has an interest in diplomatic relations and cultural exchange, a knack for event planning, great communication skills, and positive energy.

The Parks & Recreation Advisory Committee (PRAC) is charged with advising the Parks & Recreation Department Director on issues affecting parks and recreation within the community. Individuals who are active users of Juneau’s trails and parks, participate in Parks & Recreation programs, or are frequent users of its facilities are encouraged to apply. PRAC meets once a month.

For a full list of all CBJ boards and to apply, go to the Boards, Committees, Commissions & Task Forces webpage. Once received, applications are forwarded to the Assembly Human Resources Committee for consideration and appointment recommendations go to the Assembly for final action.
