Thane Road will be closed today, March 17, 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.

March 17, 2021 – News

The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) will be closing Thane Road today, March 17, from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. for high avalanche hazard due to strong winds and warming temperatures. An update will be provided at 7 p.m. today – the closure may be extended if the hazard remains elevated. Check the DOT&PF’s Thane Road webpage and its Facebook page for updates.

Should an avalanche reach Thane Road it is unlikely that DOT&PF will be able to safely remove the avalanche debris until the hazard decreases naturally. Thane residents should be prepared for extended road closures. For more information visit CBJ’s Emergency Management website for information on personal and household preparedness.

DOT&PF is monitoring the situation closely but due to forecasted weather conditions, it is unlikely that avalanche hazard reduction work will be possible in the immediate future.
