Public meeting on preserving Juneau’s history & culture Sept. 26

September 19, 2018 – News, Notices for Public Comment

After two and a half years of public outreach, the City and Borough of Juneau’s Community Development Department (CDD) is ready to roll out an updated Historic & Cultural Preservation Plan during a public meeting September 26 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Senate Building’s third floor meeting room, 175 South Franklin Street. The meeting – in partnership with Corvus Design, Corvus Culture, and Winter & Co. – is a chance for the public to review the draft goals and implementation strategies.

“We worked with community groups and individuals, and asked them to share with us their ideas and challenges when it comes to preserving culture and history in Juneau. This meeting is our way of handing it back to the public and asking – Did we get it right?” CDD Planner Allison Eddins said.

The updated Historic & Cultural Preservation Plan, originally written in 1997, creates a framework for other organizations to partner with CBJ to implement the strategies. The plan addresses things like Juneau’s built environment as well as history and culture that is missing from the built environment; cultural awareness and inclusiveness; public art; and educational and interpretative elements, like multilingual signage.

The public comment period on the updated Historic & Cultural Preservation Plan begins September 26 and goes through October 26. Email comments to [email protected], or submit them online at http://www.juneau.org/history/PreservationPlan.php.
