Preparing for CBJ’s Oct. 4, 2022 Regular Election – What’s New This Year?

August 26, 2022 – News

The City and Borough of Juneau’s annual Regular Municipal Election is just around the corner, and this year voters will be able to cast their ballot in a variety of ways in the weeks leading up to Election Day on October 4. Similar to the past two years, this election will be conducted as a by-mail/hybrid election. However, this year we will not be partnering with the Municipality of Anchorage to process ballots; this election will be conducted entirely in Juneau using the new CBJ Ballot Processing Center.

Ballots for this election will be mailed on Tuesday, September 13, 2022 to all Juneau voters at the address on file with the State of Alaska Division of Elections.  Voters will then have an opportunity to return their ballots in a number of ways:

  • Returning their ballot to one of two Juneau Vote Centers (dates/times/locations below); or
  • Returning their ballot to one of two secure Drop Boxes (dates/times/locations below); or
  • Returning their ballot via the U.S.P.S. by placing the appropriate postage on the return ballot envelope and mailing it no later than Election Day, October 4, 2022. If using this method, we highly encourage voters to have the post office hand cancel the return ballot envelope with a legible date on the postmark to ensure it may be counted.

Vote Centers will be open for two weeks prior to and including Election Day for any voters who need assistance or just prefer to turn in their ballot in person. Voters can go to a Vote Center to use a touch screen/accessible ballot marking device, to drop off their fully voted ballots, to receive assistance in obtaining a new or replacement ballot or to serve as a personal representative requiring a special needs ballot.

Register to vote or update your voter information

Register to vote online on the Alaska Division of Elections website. Sunday, September 4, is the final day to register to vote to participate in the October 4 election. Any youth who will turn 18 by Election Day can register to vote up to 90 days prior to their 18th birthday and will need to register no later than September 4 to participate in this year’s Regular Municipal Election.

If you’re already registered to vote, ensure CBJ has an accurate mailing address by going to the State of Alaska Division of Elections voter information website myvoterinformation.alaska.gov. Check and/or update your residence and mailing address by September 4 so you can receive your ballot by mail.

If you would prefer to register to vote in person or update your voter registration information in person, you can do so at any of the following locations during regular business hours:

  • Municipal Clerk’s Office – City Hall Room 202 (155 S. Seward Street)
  • All three Juneau Public Libraries (Downtown, Douglas, Mendenhall Valley branches)
  • State of Alaska Division of Elections – Region I Office located in the Mendenhall Mall Annex
  • Zach Gordon Youth Center (396 Whittier Street)

Receive your ballot at a temporary address or request an e-Ballot

For voters who will be traveling, heading off to college, or otherwise won’t be at your regular mailing address between September 13 and October 4, you can submit an application to have your CBJ Regular Election ballot mailed to an alternative temporary mailing address. Applications to vote at a temporary address are encouraged to be submitted by August 20 to be included in the initial ballot mailing and must be received by the Municipal Clerk’s Office no later than September 27. Ballots will not be forwarded.

Alternatively, voters can choose to receive a Fax/e-Ballot sent to them if they will not be at a physical address where they can receive mail. Applications and instructions for the above forms are on the CBJ Elections Website at https://juneau.org/clerk/elections.

For more information, contact the CBJ Municipal Clerk’s Office at (907) 586-5278 or go to the CBJ Elections website.
