Parks & Recreation’s free Month of Play kicks off August 1

July 22, 2024 – News

Join the City and Borough of Juneau Parks & Recreation Department for Month of Play, a month of in-person and DIY fun taking place August 1 through August 30. Complete do-it-yourself activities, use the Passport to Play for free admission to Parks & Rec facilities, join the in-person events, or do it all. All activities are free and the more you play, the more chances you have to win prizes! Learn more at the Month of Play website.

This year, Month of Play includes seven in-person events and activities:

  • Movie in the Park Shrek (PG) at the Dimond Park Field House, August 2 at 5:30 p.m. (doors open at 5:15 p.m.)
  • Capitol Park Ribbon Cutting, August 3 from 2 – 5 p.m.
  • StoryPath on the Seawalk, August 6-12
  • Food Drive at Zach Gordon Youth Center, August 14-28
  • Historical Toys at Juneau-Douglas City Museum, August 17 from 10 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
  • Mindful Fun at Douglas Library, August 17 from 1 – 3 p.m.
  • Trucks N’ Stuff at Dimond Park, August 24 from 2 – 5 p.m.

At each event, you’ll receive an entry ticket for the Month of Play drawing, featuring prizes like pool passes, private rentals at Treadwell Arena and Dimond Park Field House, free youth sports registration, and more. The prize drawing will be held on August 30.

This year, there’s a new way to earn tickets and prizes. Using the free Goosechase scavenger hunt app, teams of up to 6 people—family, friends, neighbors, or coworkers—will complete missions, answer riddles, and check in at parks or trails. Check the Goosechase tab on the Month of Play website for all the details on how to use the app and join a team. Goosechase missions begin August 7.

Don’t forget your Passport to Play, which grants free admission to the participant and up to two guardians at Augustus G. Brown Swimming Pool, Dimond Park Aquatic Center, Treadwell Arena, and Dimond Park Field House. You’ll also earn a ticket in the drawing for each visit. Download your Passport from the website beginning July 31, or pick one up at the Movie in the Park, the Capitol Park Ribbon Cutting, or in the Parks & Recreation Office in City Hall.

Sensory-friendly alternatives are available for the Movie in the Park and Trucks N’ Stuff. The sensory-friendly showing of Shrek (PG) is at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, August 2 at the Dimond Park Field House. During this show, some lights will be left on and the volume will be decreased with the subtitles on. At Trucks N’ Stuff, a quiet hour with no horns or sirens will be held from 1 – 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 24 at Dimond Park.
