Parks & Recreation seeks public comment on land disposal of Valley parcel

December 10, 2020 – Notices for Public Comment

Juneau residents have until December 28 to weigh in on this question: Should the City and Borough of Juneau dispose of the 4518 sq. ft. park lot on the corner of Slim Williams Way and Arctic Circle and thereby allow the adjacent property owners to acquire the lot? Answer the question and submit comments here through December 28.

Owners of the property located at 1070 Arctic Circle have submitted an application to acquire the CBJ property, which was dedicated as a public park by the Planning Commission in 1983. The legal description of the property, managed by Parks and Recreation, is Brigadoon Estates II, Block B, Park. The 4,518 square-foot lot is located on the corner of Slim Williams Way and Arctic Circle. The applicant intends to subdivide their property into two legal lots; the CBJ property is needed to meet minimum lot size requirements for this subdivision.

If the application is approved by the Assembly, the property would be given to the applicant at no cost pursuant to CBJ 49.15.404. The Parks & Recreation Advisory Committee will consider public comment before making a recommendation to the Assembly. The Planning Commission also will consider whether to retract the 1983 public park dedication.

The triangular parcel is forested and elevated from street level. Parks and Recreation does not have any plans for development, and recognizes that public access and use of the lot are difficult because of the size, topography, and adjacency to the road intersection.

The deadline to submit public comment is December 28. Submit comments online, email them to [email protected], or mail them to Parks & Recreation 155 S. Seward St., Juneau AK 99801.
