North Franklin Construction Postponed, Taku Boulevard Construction Begins August 3

The first phase of construction work along North Franklin Street in downtown Juneau has been postponed to summer of 2027. Early site investigation revealed more preparation is needed than what was originally planned for. The area will return to normal traffic and pedestrian access by Monday, August 3. 

Construction on part of Taku Boulevard, from Mendenhall Loop Road to Aspen Avenue, will begin as early as Monday, August 3. Construction is expected to complete in late October. The project will replace aging infrastructure, including water, sewer, and storm utilities. It will also replace the roadbed, sidewalks, curb and gutter.  

Here’s what to expect during construction:  

  • Through traffic will be closed to the public during working hours, which are 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Saturdays.  
  • Access to residences from Loop Road to Aspen Avenue will be maintained. Pedestrian traffic along Mendenhall Loop Road will need to follow signage when traveling across the Taku intersection.  

The Taku Boulevard Reconstruction Project is funded through the Capital Improvement Program process. The project was identified through prioritization, where City and Borough of Juneau staff in the streets, water, and sewer departments prioritize repairs and upgrades based on infrastructure age, use and needed repairs. 

The City and Borough of Juneau thanks residents for their patience and cooperation while this work to upgrade critical infrastructure is underway.
