New recycling center opens Jan. 14 with additional operating days; drop boxes going away
Juneau’s new recycling center opens Tuesday, January 14, and will be more convenient to use, operating five days a week instead of the current three. The City and Borough of Juneau is contracting with Waste Management to operate the recycling center.
Located in the current site at 5600 Tonsgard Court, the new recycling center will be open for residential and commercial use:
Tuesday – Friday, 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. &
Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The recycling center will continue to accept sorted plastics #1 and #2, glass bottles and jars, aluminum cans, tin cans, mixed paper, and corrugated cardboard. For more information, go to juneaurecycling.com.
In addition, CBJ plans to remove the recycling drop boxes January 14 due to the issue of frequent dumping, misuse of the containers, and the high cost of operating them in the winter. CBJ introduced the drop box pilot program in 2016 and will be evaluating the program’s successes, failures, and future in the coming months.
