New parking permit system streamlines permit purchases and capacity

June 24, 2024 – News

New parking permit technology goes into effect in the Marine Parking Garage (MPG) and Downtown Transit Center (DTC) on July 1, the latest in a series of major improvements to bring CBJ parking systems up to date.

In addition to allowing drivers to purchase and manage permits online, the new permit system uses License Plate Recognition (LPR) technology to eliminate the need for physical permits – your license plate will be a virtual permit. This technology will also make it easier to monitor occupancy and parking capacity, ensuring that both parking garages are used to their fullest capacity.

At the same time, it will be easier than ever before to purchase and manage parking permits. Hangtags are no longer needed and up to three vehicles can share a single permit (but only one vehicle can use the garage at a time). Customers can add or remove vehicles from their permit online.

Purchase and manage annual and monthly permits online with a credit/debit card at juneau.thepermitportal.com. You can still purchase permits with cash or check at the Parks & Recreation office on the second floor of City Hall (155 Heritage Way).

Four additional hourly parking spaces will be soon added to the MPG.

As before, all spaces in both DTC and MPG require a permit or payment from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday – Friday, including EV spaces and ADA spaces. Vehicles with valid ADA permit placards remain exempt from the two-hour limit for on-street parking.

  • Library patrons can park for free for up to two hours in spaces A-V with validation from library staff.
  • Hourly parking is available only on the ground floor of the MPG (spaces 1-25), as well as the Shopper’s Lot and North Franklin Street Lot.
  • Parking in MPG Level 2 and above requires an MPG permit.
  • All parking at the DTC requires a DTC permit.
