**Prior to the 1980s a variety of construction materials contained asbestos fibers. It is difficult to choose a single year as the determination for when houses would no longer have asbestos containing materials. The original construction date of 1984 or later was the cut-off date agreed upon between the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation and Waste Management for accepting materials from the Mendenhall flood without documentation from a certified professional that it does not contain asbestos.
Standard fees will apply. Impacted residents are strongly encouraged to save receipts and expense records for potential reimbursement through state or federal assistance programs.
Landfill owner and operator Waste Management has brought additional operations staff to Juneau and further information will be provided as it is available.
For questions about self-haul, please contact Capitol Disposal Landfill at (907) 780-7801.
Residents who are unable to self-haul are encouraged to contact Alaska Waste at (907) 780-7800.
