HESCO Barrier Project Phase 1A begins May 13
The CBJ Assembly today approved the proposal to extend installation of the HESCO flood barriers to further protect property and infrastructure during a special meeting of the Assembly Committee of the Whole (view recording). This extension is referred to as Phase 1A of the HESCO barrier project and is guided by the recently released Mendenhall Valley Flood Fighting Inundation Maps.
Thanks to efficiencies in both the project timeline and budget, CBJ completed the Phase 1 HESCO barrier installation on May 10 and will now move to Phase 1A.
On Tuesday, May 13, HESCO contractors will begin installation of HESCO barriers along the river adjacent to Dimond Park, from the end of the Rivercourt Way to the extent of the CBJ property behind Kax̲dig̲oowu Héen Elementary School.
Barriers will be installed on the social trail adjacent to the riverside edge of Dimond Park, work will be occurring simultaneously at both sides of Dimond Park. Contractors and equipment will be accessing the trails near the Dimond Park Fieldhouse as well as the north side of Thunder Mountain Middle School. Work is expected to continue through late May or early June.
Please avoid the area as the trails will be closed during this time. Both sides of the Mendenhall Pedestrian Bridge will be open to the public and there should be minimal impacts to vehicular traffic flow; however, the public is advised follow posted signage and be aware of heavy equipment operating in the area.
Your patience and accommodation are appreciated as CBJ continues its efforts to protect the community and infrastructure from the ongoing threat of glacial lake outburst floods.
