For qualifying senior citizens, it’s time to apply for the Sales Tax Hardship Rebate

February 15, 2018 – News

The deadline to apply for this year’s Senior Citizen Sales Tax Hardship Rebate is June 30, 2018. Applications and filings instructions are now available.

On January 1, 2016, changes were enacted to the senior citizen sales tax exemption program. Only essential items, like groceries and certain utilities, are now exempt at the time of purchase.  For all non-essential purchases, sales taxes are paid at the time of purchase. Qualifying senior citizens who apply will receive an annual rebate of the estimated sales taxes paid on non-essential purchases. Qualification is based on an applicant’s gross annual income level. The rebate will be paid in late September.

Applications and filing instructions for the CBJ Senior Sales Tax Hardship Rebate program can be found here on the Finance Department website under Sales Tax Hot Topics. Married couples may file a joint application.

You can also contact the CBJ Sales Tax office at 907-586-5265 to request an application and for any questions on the program requirements. Previous years’ applicants have been mailed an application packet. Informational postcards have also been sent to all other Juneau senior citizens.

Applications for the Senior Sales Tax hardship Rebate must be received by the Sales Tax Office by June 30, 2018.
