New exhibits at the City Museum

January 30, 2019 – FYI, News

Visit the City Museum for the opening reception of two new exhibits: Changing Landscape in Juneau Alaska, by Crystal Cudworth and Poems, Stories and Artifacts by students of UAS Associate Professor, Emily Wall.  This free event takes place on Friday, February 1, 4:30-7 p.m.

Cudworth, an artist who focuses on the medium of oil painting, will display recent works painted outdoors in the Gold Creek area as part of Changing Landscape in Juneau Alaska.

“This series of paintings was performed as a meditation on Gold Creek (Dzantiki’i Héeni).  I focused on one location in order to study its aqueous patterns and rhythms, beginning at Ebner Falls and ending at its estuary border,” states Cudworth.

Changing Landscape in Juneau Alaska will be on display through February 23 and the artwork will be for sale. Cudworth will present on her show for Coffee & Collections on February 2 from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the City Museum.

Poems, Stories and Artifacts is an exhibit of ekphrastic writing by students of Associate Professor Emily Wall’s Advanced Creative Writing Class. Ekphrastic writing is a form of creative writing describing a work of art, an object or a visual image. For this project, students chose to observe an artifact from the Juneau-Douglas City Museum’s permanent collection and then wrote a poem or story on the object.

“We are looking at all the ways art inspires us, and exploring entrance points for beginning poems, stories, and short memoir pieces. This class is really about that moment of inspiration and how we grasp it,” states Wall.

Poems, Stories and Artifacts will be on display through March 29.
