Fireworks use guidelines for Fourth of July

July 1, 2022 – FYI, News

A fireworks ban due to fire risk is currently not anticipated. If fire risk increases and state or local fire marshals institute a ban, a new information release will be issued.

The Gastineau Channel Fireworks show, which is run by the volunteer Juneau Fireworks Crew, is scheduled to take place starting just before midnight on Sunday, July 3.

The City and Borough of Juneau reminds the public of these rules for personal fireworks use during the holiday weekend:

  • Concussive fireworks – like mortars – can only be used outside the Fire Service Area on private property during these hours:
    • Sunday, July 3 at 10 a.m. – midnight
    • Monday, July 4 at midnight – 1 a.m. & 10 a.m. – 11:59 p.m.
  • All other fireworks can be used on private property during these hours:
    • Sunday, July 3 at 10 a.m. – midnight
    • Monday, July 4 at midnight – 1 a.m. & 10 a.m. – 11:59 p.m.
  • The Fire Service Area extends from the end of Thane Road to Cohen Drive; out to the North Douglas boat launch and up to the houses on Fish Creek Road; out to the end of Sandy Beach on Douglas; all of Lemon Creek; and all of the Mendenhall Valley. See a map here. Concussive fireworks are not authorized within these boundaries.

In addition, CBJ requests that individuals desiring to use any kind of fireworks do so in a manner that is considerate of others. Fireworks can create loud, sometimes startling noise, which can have an unfavorable impact on people and pets within hearing range. Please keep in mind that the use of fireworks in the community offers some unique challenges. Juneau’s topography results in loud sounds reflecting off of mountains or water, and sound often travels farther than intended. As a general practice, please keep in mind the wellbeing of your neighbors and those around you when using fireworks.
