Docks & Harbors Board to consider improvements to Amalga Harbor on May 30
The City and Borough of Juneau Docks & Harbors Department has been exploring how to improve the safety and efficiency of Amalga Harbor. The Docks & Harbors Board of Directors will hold a public hearing Thursday, May 30 at 5 p.m. in City Hall Chambers on Amalga Harbor improvements. Stakeholders and users of Amalga Harbor, as well as the general public, are invited to participate.
Docks & Harbors held a public meeting on April 2 at the Mendenhall Valley Library. PND Engineers facilitated the meeting and gave a presentation on different options for Amalga Harbor improvements. Over 30 members of the public attended, with the vast majority supporting the “no improvement option” and recommending removal of the existing fish cleaning station. Subsequent to the meeting, the Board of Directors of the Territorial Sportsmen passed a resolution for no improvements at Amalga Harbor and the removal of the public fish cleaning float.
Individuals who want to provide input on future amenities at Amalga Harbor are highly encouraged to attend the May 30 meeting. Following the public hearing, the Docks & Harbors Board could direct staff in a number of ways, such as:
- No action
- Removal of the existing fish cleaning and no further action
- Proceed with improvements at Amalga Harbor with funding available
- Proceed with improvement at another upland locations, which funding has not been identified
- Proceed with further evaluations/studies to reevaluate options in the fall
The public can also email written comments to Port Director Carl Uchytil at [email protected] before May 30.
