CBJ reports highest 14-day COVID-19 case count, majority are unvaccinated residents

CBJ’s Emergency Operations Center’s (EOC) Weekly Report announces the highest 14-day case count to date with 150 individuals testing positive. The majority of cases were among residents, and 70% of the cases were in unvaccinated individuals. The Delta variant was the predominant strain identified in the most recent batch of sequencing in Juneau and accounts for over 80 percent of cases in Alaska.

“We have always known that vaccines aren’t 100 percent effective, but the data shows that they are extremely effective at preventing serious illness and death – even against the more transmissible Delta variant,” EOC Incident Commander and Deputy City Manager Mila Cosgrove said. “Of the people who have tested positive for COVID-19 in Juneau, the fully vaccinated individuals are reporting milder symptoms than those who are unvaccinated. The single best thing you can do to protect yourself and the community is to get a COVID-19 vaccine.”

Statewide, 96% of hospitalizations and 97% of all deaths between February 1 and June 30 were in unvaccinated individuals. To date, 47.7 percent of the total population of Alaska and 68.7 percent of Juneau’s total population have received at least one dose of a vaccine.

The community risk level is at Level 2 Moderate. There will be a Special Assembly Meeting on Wednesday, July 28 at 5:30 p.m. to consider extending the community mitigation measures past their current expiration date of July 31.
