July 31, 2023 – News

The City & Borough of Juneau is pleased to announce that Catherine Melville will serve as the next Director of Juneau Public Libraries. Melville has been Acting Library Director since February 24.

Melville joined Juneau Public Libraries in 2003, and has worked in a variety of positions over the last 20 years, most recently as Collection Development Librarian and Manager of Technical Services, supervising library staff who build and maintain physical and digital library collections.

“I’m looking forward to continuing to work with my fantastic colleagues to connect Juneau residents of all ages to the wide variety of free resources our libraries have to offer, from physical and digital materials, to educational and entertaining programs and story-times, to community meeting spaces,” Melville said.

“Catherine is a talented and committed librarian with a thorough understanding of how our libraries serve the Juneau community,” said Deputy City Manager Robert Barr. “We’re fortunate to have a Director with her wealth of experience and longstanding ties here.”

Melville earned a Master of Library & Information Science from the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 2009 and a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre from the University of British Columbia. She was born and raised in Juneau and is a 1997 graduate of Juneau-Douglas High School.
