First Friday: Art at the Capitol and Free Admission to the City Museum
The Juneau-Douglas City Museum will assist First Friday participants to view artwork in the Capitol building on August 3 from 3-6 p.m. This event is free. Come experience the splendor of the recently renovated Capitol building, which houses artwork by a variety of artists including Sydney Laurence, Byron Birdsall and Herb Bonnet. This event marks the first public invitation to the Capitol since completion of renovations in 2017. In addition, admission to the Juneau-Douglas City Museum will be free from 4-6 p.m. for First Friday.
City Salon: How Weather, Navigation and Communication Contributed to the Sinking of the Princess Sophia
The Juneau-Douglas City Museum will host a discourse on the sinking of the Princess Sophia on Saturday, August 11 from 4:30-6:00 p.m. This event is free. The City Museum is excited to host a new program titled, City Salon. This program invites community members to the Museum to engage in discourse on a variety of local topics.
This event will include a discussion of the book, The Sinking of the Princess Sophia: Taking the North Down with Her written by Ken Coates and Bill Morrison and is available for purchase in the Museum Store. Tom Ainsworth, Meteorologist in Charge of the National Weather Service (NWS), will present on the history of weather prediction and the evolving role of the NWS in search and rescue. Ed Page, Executive Director of Marine Exchange of Alaska, will discuss the history of navigation in Lynn Canal and how navigation has improved since the sinking of the Sophia 100 years ago. Light refreshments will be served. This event is free.
