Assessor’s Office continues to canvass neighborhoods through October

September 12, 2018 – FYI, News

The City and Borough of Juneau Assessor’s Office is continuing to canvass the Back Loop, Pt. Louisa, Auke Bay, and Auke Mountain neighborhoods through October. The Assessor’s Office conducts reevaluations of various taxable properties within the borough between April and October every year. With about 12,000 taxable parcels throughout Juneau, the Assessor’s Office divides the borough into neighborhoods, which are reevaluated every five years.

The reevaluation process involves an exterior inspection of a property. Exterior inspections take place Monday through Friday, between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. They include taking photos from various angles, verifying measurements, and examining the property’s condition in order to provide a value for tax purposes. Prior to the inspection process, appraisers with the Assessor’s Office will attempt to contact the property resident by knocking on the door. If no one answers, the appraiser will leave a door hanger notification and proceed with the inspection. If you have questions regarding the identity of Assessor’s Office staff, please request to see their Assessor’s Office identification.

State law (AS 29.45.150) requires that all taxable properties within a municipality are systematically reviewed and updated by the assessor. In 1993, the Juneau Assembly passed a resolution establishing a five-year cycle of reevaluation.
