Airport seeks public comment on plan to demolish north wing of terminal

February 16, 2018 – News, Notices for Public Comment

The Juneau International Airport has been in the process of modernizing the airport terminal since 2005. To complete the project, the Airport Board has conceptually approved a proposal to demolish and reconstruct the oldest section of the terminal, the area commonly referred to as the North Wing. The Airport now seeks public comment before moving forward with demolition.

The North Wing, totaling about 35,000 square feet, is the area of the terminal where regional air carriers operate. It was originally constructed in 1948, 1957 and 1973. Demolition is scheduled to start in April 2019 and new construction will generally occur on the same footprint. This second phase of work will address code deficiencies, replace infrastructure, improve energy efficiency, and increase flexibility and adaptability of interior spaces.

Due to the original construction dates of the North Wing, the Airport is participating in a Section 106 review as part of the National Historic Preservation Act and invites the community to comment on this proposal.
