46 new COVID-19 cases reported for Juneau

The Alaska Department of Health and Social Services reports 46 new individuals in the Juneau community – 45 residents and one nonresident – identified with COVID-19 for September 21. There are currently five people with COVID-19 hospitalized at Bartlett Regional Hospital.

The Juneau School District reports two new individuals who’ve tested positive for COVID-19 and were infectious while in school:

• One at Dzantik’i Heeni Middle School (all classes operating on regular schedules)
• One at Riverbend Elementary (the case is under investigation)

Juneau Public Health reports these generalized case trends for the past week:

• Juneau has roughly 193 active cases.
• There are no large groupings of case positivity at this point. Case exposure seems to be coming from social gatherings or passing among family groupings.
• Household spread continues to be an issue. Once one person in the house is positive, most people in the household also test positive over the next week or two.
• The Juneau School District continues to report regular case activity. They are monitoring closely and working issues classroom by classroom. Most case positivity is showing up in elementary schools as the age group is not yet eligible for vaccination.
• Several daycares have experienced isolated cases that led to the need for quarantine. Currently, there is no spread at any of these daycares.
• There are a couple workplaces that have 3-5 cases.
• Travel related cases continue to pop up, either Juneau residents who have traveled, or people who had out-of-town visitors and later learned they were positive.

Statewide, the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services reports 861 new people identified with COVID-19 – 835 are residents and 26 are nonresidents. The state also reports six deaths – a male Anchorage resident in his 80s, a male Anchorage resident in his 70s, a female Soldotna resident in her 70s, a male Anchorage resident in his 70s, a female Dillingham Census Area resident in her 60s, and a female Anchorage resident in her 70s – bringing the total number of resident deaths to 465. Alaska has had 98,891 cumulative resident cases of COVID-19 and a total of 4,436 nonresidents.

Juneau vaccine update:

• 72.8 percent of the total population of Juneau has received at least 1 dose of vaccine and 69.2 percent has completed the vaccine series.
• 93 percent of the population in Juneau age 65+ has received at least one dose of vaccine and 92.7 percent has completed the vaccine series.
