MOUNTAIN WAVE WINDS FOR DOWNTOWN JUNEAU AND SOUTH DOUGLAS AREAS WILL CONTINUE TO PRODUCE BURSTS OF STRONG WINDS WITH GUSTS UP 60 MPH. THE GUSTS WILL COME IN WAVES EARLY THIS MORNING THEN DIMINISH. GUSTS UP TO 82 MPH WERE REPORTED SUNDAY EVENING WITH THE FIRST WAVE OF TAKU WINDS HIT THE AREA.

TODAY ... SUNNY ... LOCALLY VERY WINDY. HIGHS AROUND 26. NEAR
DOWNTOWN JUNEAU AND DOUGLAS ... EAST WIND 20 TO 30 MPH WITH GUSTS TO 60 MPH IN THE MORNING ... DECREASING TO 10 TO 20 MPH.
ELSEWHERE ... EAST WIND 10 TO 20 MPH.

TONIGHT ... CLEAR. LOWS 10 TO 16 ... EXCEPT AROUND 6 ABOVE IN
WIND SHELTERED AREAS. NORTHEAST WIND 10 TO 20 MPH.

TUESDAY ... SUNNY. HIGHS AROUND 23. SOUTHEAST WIND 5 TO 15 MPH.

The last of the snow available for transport got blown around yesterday. Fortunately there wasn't much of it left. Taku winds through this morning.

No new precipitation and temps remain cold, -10c at the Tram. Primary concerns are still sun warming - though less of an issue with the colder temps, and isolated wind slab pockets above a faceted layer.

The potential for large slides that would come close to urban zones and structures is very small.

Hazard is LOW today: Generally safe avalanche conditions. Watch for unstable snow on isolated terrain features. Natural and human-triggered avalanches unlikely. Small avalanches in isolated areas or extreme terrain. Normal caution is advised.

Human triggered slides are still possible in backcountry locations, start to consider hard slabs now in wind affected areas. If you are sledding or skiing keep that in mind and travel accordingly.

MOUNTAIN SAVVY

Eaglecrest is running an outreach education program for kids age 12 - 16.

March 21st is the last class of the season. It takes place entirely on snow and is for East and West Bowl riders/skiers that are starting to explore Eaglecrest and it's environs off piste.

The program focuses on working with peers and starting to learn the tools for good decision making in the mountains. Safety gear is provided for those who don't have it and kids who take the class this year will be eligible for a raffle of two separate sets of Beacon, Probe, Shovel, and Pack.

Similar programs in Washington and Utah run $150 a day, but a partnership between the Eagelcrest Ski Patrol, Juneau Mountain Rescue, JSP, and many of our local outdoor retailers means Eagelcrest can enroll kids for just $25. For a 4.5hr course it is a great opportunity.
