Winds were moving a lot of snow around on Mt Juneau yesterday, more of the same is forecast for today. With a 10 - 30kt spread it is the perfect speed for windloading. Pay attention to local orographics, but generally loading will be greatest on SW - W - NW slopes.

Temps held pretty steady and cold, -6c to -9c at the Tram, more of the same expected there too.

With no new snow, and no warm up before Tuesday the primary concern is still wind slabs being created in our start zones.

Sizes of slides are becoming a little larger than they have been but I still don't expect them to damage structures. However, it is a good day to stay out from underneath steeper terrain.

Hazard is CONSIDERABLE today: Natural avalanches possible; human-triggered avalanches likely. Dangerous avalanche conditions exist. Careful snowpack evaluation, cautious route-finding and conservative decision-making essential.

Tip:

REMOTE TRIGGER:

Someone does not need to be on the avalanche to trigger the avalanche. Especially in a snowpack with high propagation potential, a person can initiate a fracture from some distance away.

We call these ?remote? triggers, they have been common on both Douglas and the Mainland this week. You can remotely trigger an avalanche from the ridge above a slope, a gentler slope next to the avalanche and especially from a flat or gentle area below the avalanche.

Needless to say, if you remotely-trigger an avalanche, the snowpack is extremely unstable and you need to choose your routes very carefully.
