Reminder: no witness signature required to vote in CBJ municipal election

With multiple elections taking place this fall, it’s easy to get confused about different dates and requirements. Remember that you can always check the CBJ Elections website at juneau.org/clerk/elections to find accurate information about when, where, and how to vote in the October 1, 2024 CBJ Regular Municipal Election.

A witness signature is not required to vote in CBJ municipal elections. Voters only need to provide their own signature and a personal identifier. Carefully read the instructions on your ballot return envelope or check the Notice of Election for a complete description of how to certify and return your ballot.

You may remember providing a witness signature in the past. Although witness signatures were originally part of CBJ’s vote by mail process, that requirement was removed from the code in 2021. You can read or search the complete elections code online at juneau.org/law-department/cbj-code.

For questions about CBJ elections, please contact the Municipal Clerk’s Office at [email protected] or (907) 586-5278, option 4.

Mendenhall River flooding update: regular debris collection wraps up September 30

Over the past two months, CBJ and Alaska DOT&PF crews have collected over 700 tons of disaster-related debris from residents affected by the August 6 glacial lake outburst flood event. We want to thank all of the staff, volunteers, and community members who made this process run smoothly to help affected residents clear these materials from their homes and the right-of-way.

CBJ crews have seen a major reduction in the volume of flood-damaged debris requiring collection. With that in mind, Monday, September 30 will be the last day CBJ will be doing routine debris collection. Please move all flood-related waste to the right-of-way for collection and email [email protected] to have your items collected before September 30.

If you are working with a contractor to remove construction and demolition waste (such as flooring and drywall) after that date, please ask them to contact [email protected], and CBJ staff may collect these items on a case-by-case basis.

For questions, please contact [email protected].

Repair work on View Drive September 19-21

CBJ and SECON, will be performing emergency road work to repair flood damage on View Drive from Thursday, September 19 through Saturday, September 21. (See the project map for the approximate work area.) Work will include grinding the existing asphalt/chip seal, regrading, and new asphalt pavement.

During pavement removal and grading operations, local traffic will have access to the area. On the day of paving (Friday or Saturday), the area will be completely closed to traffic from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. If you live within the boundaries of the work area, you may park your vehicle on the Mendenhall Loop Road side and walk to/from your residence during this time.

Please be aware that paving work is weather dependent and subject to schedule changes.  Residents will be individually notified at least 24 hours in advance of the day and hours of the road closure.

Please pay attention to all traffic signs and safety devices. We appreciate your patience and cooperation as we work to minimize inconvenience and perform these important repairs.

An important message from CBJ Elections

CBJ Elections is aware of a technical glitch that occurred with approximately 1% of ballots mailed from our printers. Some people who voted a questioned ballot in the State Primary Election or updated their voter registration between 8/23/24 and 9/1/24 may receive two ballots in the mail. Those people should vote one ballot and destroy the other.

CBJ Elections has protocols in place to ensure that each voter casts a single vote. Upon return, only one ballot envelope from any voter is accepted – the first one received. Others are rejected. For more information, please see the FAQs on the website at juneau.org/clerk/elections.

CBJ Elections knows how this glitch occurred and has taken steps to ensure it does not happen in future elections. Thank you to everyone who called with questions and thank you for voting.

For questions about CBJ municipal elections, please contact the CBJ Municipal Clerk’s Office at [email protected] or (907) 586-5278.

Find out whodunit as Parks and Recreation Clue kicks off September 20

The game is afoot! Hit the trail to find out whodunit—and get a chance to win prizes—as Parks & Recreation Clue kicks off this Friday, September 20 on Gastineau Meadows Trail.

Detectives of all ages are invited to investigate during three outdoor Clue games this fall. Each game will take place over a different weekend on a different trail around Juneau. Print or download a Clue Card online, then hit the trail to track down clues. When you’ve found them all, your Clue Card will reveal the suspect, weapon, and location of the crime.

Once you have an answer, go to bit.ly/juneauclue to make your accusation by 8 a.m. Monday. If you’ve correctly solved the mystery, you’ll get two tickets for a prize drawing—plus a bonus ticket if you take a selfie on the trail. Prize drawings will be held after each game, with a final Grand Prize drawing on October 21.

This year’s Clue games will take place on the following weekends:

  • September 20-22, Gastineau Meadows Trail
  • October 4-6, Auke Lake Trail
  • October 18-20, Point Caroline Trail

Visit the Parks & Rec Clue website to download a Clue Card, get trail directions, or learn more about the prize drawings.

For questions, contact Parks & Recreation at (907) 586-5226 or [email protected].
