Join CBJ for Community Listening Sessions to shape Juneau’s future

The City and Borough of Juneau (CBJ) is launching an update to its Comprehensive Plan, a big-picture guide that helps the city decide how to grow and develop over the next 20 years. To kick off this important process, CBJ is hosting a series of Community Listening Sessions over two days at four different locations to hear directly from residents about their experiences, challenges, and vision for Juneau’s future.

Events over 2 days, at 4 locations – find one near you!

Tuesday, April 22:

  • 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., Centennial Hall, Egan Room
  • 5 – 7 p.m., Thunder Mountain Middle School, Commons

Wednesday, April 23:

  • 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., Mendenhall Valley Library, Large Meeting Room
  • 6 – 8 p.m., Juneau Douglas High School, Commons

The listening sessions will be open house style, with multiple opportunities to talk, brainstorm, and ask questions—you’re welcome to stop by at any time that’s convenient for you, or to stay all two hours.

What is a Comprehensive Plan?

The Comprehensive Plan is a big-picture guide that helps shape Juneau—from the types of housing available to the places you shop, work, and spend time with family and friends. It influences decisions about parks, schools, roads, and public transportation. The plan also helps protect our natural environment and support the local economy.

How can I participate?

This is just the first opportunity to get involved. Over the next three years, there will be additional chances to share feedback during the Comprehensive Plan’s three phases:

  • Phase 1: Listening and Learning — Gathering community input on challenges and opportunities to create a shared vision.
  • Phase 2: Imagining Possibilities — Exploring different scenarios for Juneau’s growth.
  • Phase 3: Shaping Policies for Action — Developing clear strategies and policies to guide future decisions.

For more information on the Comprehensive Plan update, upcoming events, and ways to stay involved, visit ourfuture.juneau.gov.

Register now for 6th annual Walk Southeast

Hit the trails, go for a walk, or even jump on the treadmill in Juneau Parks & Recreation’s annual virtual trek from Juneau to Ketchikan. Walk Southeast is a free and fun activity that helps you stay active by tracking miles you walk, run, or hike between May 1 and September 1. The more miles you log, the more chances you have to win in a local prize drawing. Hit 150 miles and get entered in the Alaska Airlines drawing for two round-trip tickets. To qualify, you must also be registered, live in Alaska, and submit your tracker by September 2. Register now through May 7 at walksoutheast.org.

Walk Southeast, created by Juneau Parks & Recreation, is a region-wide activity. This year Juneau, Ketchikan, Sitka, and Petersburg vie for the title of 2025 Walk Southeast champion, which goes to the community with the highest average of miles walked per participant. All participants register through walksoutheast.org.

Registered participants have two options to track miles: a traditional fillable/printable PDF Mileage Tracker or the My Virtual Mission app presented by SEARHC. For all the details, go to walksoutheast.org or the Facebook event.

Join Juneau Parks & Recreation to kick off the challenge at Twin Lakes on Sunday, May 4 from 1 – 2:30 p.m. Get help setting up your My Virtual Mission app, enter a prize drawing, and add a couple miles to your tracker with a walk along the lake. Door prizes will be drawn throughout and a #teamjuneau group photo will be taken at about 2 p.m.

Capital Transit launches new mobile payment option

Riders offered 50% discount on fares purchased via Token Transit app April 14-20

Public transit users in Juneau now have a new, convenient and cost-saving way to purchase bus fares. Capital Transit, the City and Borough of Juneau’s public transit system, launched the Token Transit app this month which allows users to pay for public transit using their smartphone. To kick off the new payment option, CBJ and Capital Transit are offering riders 50% off regular fares purchased during the week of April 14-20, 2025, including single ride  and April monthly passes.

“Token Transit provides a modernized and convenient public transit experience for all of our riders,” explains Capital Transit Superintendent, Rich Ross. “We are excited for both new and long-time transit users to take advantage of this option and the 50% promotional discount.”

Beyond the promotional period, Token Transit users can avoid ever paying more than the cost of a monthly pass via fare capping. Fare capping allows riders to purchase and use single ride passes with the app, with an automatic upgrade to a monthly pass when their spending total during the month reaches the cost of a monthly pass. Fare capping is only available when purchasing single-ride passes in the Token Transit app. Cash fares, gifts, and other discounted fare types do not apply towards fare capping.

Capital Transit will continue to offer the ability to pay with cash on the bus, or to purchase paper monthly unlimited passes at the existing locations, including the Municipal Building Cash Office, Mendenhall Valley Public Library, Fred Meyer, Foodland IGA, and the University of Alaska Southeast.

While physical bus tokens are no longer available for sale at existing locations they will continue to be honored.  Capital Transit has repurposed the remaining token inventory to assist with continued support of CBJ social service partners.  Social Service agencies interested in purchasing physical tokens or to be set up with a customized digital fare platform should email [email protected].

Riders may also visit  juneaucapitaltransit.org/fares to download the Token Transit App, watch a short instructional video, and learn more about Capital Transit fares and services.

For questions, contact Capital Transit at (907) 789-6901.
