Spring is here and the Jensen-Olson Arboretum’s flowering plants—including its nationally-recognized primula collection—are in bloom! Join JOA for events throughout May to get outdoors and celebrate the arrival of spring and summer in Juneau.

Mother’s Day Celebration

Guided Garden Tour
Friday, May 16 | 1 – 2:15 p.m.
Join us for a free tour highlighting the Arboretum’s renowned Primula collection. This event is part of the three-day American Primrose Society National Show, which this year takes place in Juneau. Native Plant Walk
Sunday, May 25 | 11 a.m.
Learn about Southeast Alaska’s native trees and shrubs on a guided garden walk.

Family Beach Exploration
Saturday, May 31 | 10 a.m.
This hands-on, educational program for children ages 6–12 takes place during low tide, offering the perfect chance to see the beach habitat in action. Please keep in mind that all children must be accompanied by an adult.

Join May 7 open house for public comment on Downtown Douglas/West Juneau draft area plan

The Downtown Douglas/West Juneau (DD/WJ) Steering Committee is seeking public comment on the draft DD/WJ Area Plan. This plan encompasses the area from Sandy Beach to the Douglas Bridge, and, if adopted, will become part of CBJ’s Comprehensive Plan, a big-picture guide that helps the city decide how to grow and develop over the next 20 years.

The steering committee will host an open house on Wednesday, May 7 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. to discuss the draft plan and gather feedback. Community members who live, work, and/or recreate in the Douglas/West Juneau area are encouraged to attend to learn more about the plan and provide feedback on the vision, goals, and actions it proposes.

“May the fourth be with you” at Treadwell Arena’s final skate on May 4

Join Juneau Parks & Recreation for one last adventure on the ice as we wrap up the season with a Star Wars-themed public skate at Treadwell Arena on Sunday, May 4 from 6:45–8:15 p.m.

Come dressed as your favorite Jedi, Sith, or Star Wars character—costumes are highly encouraged, and admission is free for anyone in themed attire. Whether you’re wielding a lightsaber or channeling your inner droid, this is your chance to skate into the galaxy.

Enjoy music, lights, and interstellar vibes as we send off the season in style. All ages welcome!

Registration for Youth Outdoor Soccer opens May 5

Registration for CBJ Parks & Recreation’s Youth Outdoor Soccer program will open on Monday, May 5 at 8 a.m. Sign up online through the Parks and Rec registration catalog (under the “Youth and Teen” tab).

The 2025 Youth Outdoor Soccer program for kids ages 5-14 will run for 8 weeks from July through August. Practices will take place for one hour one night a week, with games on Saturdays between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

The program includes both a coed and a girls’ league, with league divisions organized by age and area. (Please be aware that divisions may be combined if registration numbers are low.) Early bird registration runs through May 18 and costs $55 plus tax. From May 19 onward, registration cost increases to $65 plus tax. Children must turn 5 years old by August 31 to register.
