Candidate Nominating Petition Forms Now Available, Filing Period for Assembly and School Board Seats Opens August 2

Nominating Petitions are now available in the Municipal Clerk’s office in City Hall and online at: https://juneau.org/clerk/elections

The filing period for the City & Borough of Juneau Assembly and School Board opens Friday, August 2, 2019 at 8:00 a.m.  Voters will elect four Assemblymembers and two School Board members at the October 1, 2019 Regular Municipal Election.  Filing for the seats closes Monday, August 12, 2019 at 4:30 p.m.

Offices to be filled (elected by the voters at-large)

One (1)   Areawide Assemblymember: 3-year term  (Corrected!)

Two (2)   District One Assemblymembers: One seat for 3-year term and one seat for a 1-year term

One (1)   District Two Assemblymember: 3-year term 

 Two (2)   School Board Members: 3-year terms   

 In order to file for office, candidates must submit a Declaration of Candidacy Form with their Nomination Petition signed by at least 25 registered voters (more signatures are recommended in case one or more signature is disqualified) as well as the Alaska Public Offices Commission-Public Official Financial Disclosure Statement.

 Candidates for office must be qualified voters of the City and Borough of Juneau:

(1)        Qualified to vote in State elections;

(2)        A resident of the municipality for at least thirty days immediately preceding the election;

(3)        Registered to vote in state elections at a residence address within the municipality at least thirty days before the municipal election at which the person seeks to vote; and

(4)        Not disqualified under Article V of the Alaska Constitution.

In addition, candidates for Assembly must be a resident of CBJ for at least one year immediately preceding election to office. Also, candidates for Assembly District 1 and District 2 seats must reside in the district from which elected or appointed at the time of the Assemblymember’s election or appointment. For the District 1 Assembly seats, the candidate who receives the greatest number of votes is elected to the three-year term and the candidate receiving the second highest number of votes is elected to the one-year term.

How to Run for Local Office Workshop – June 15, 2019

If you think you might run for office – or might work for someone who is – our annual FREE Workshop on How to Run for Local Office will provide you with everything you need to know about running for an Assembly or School Board seat. The 2019 Workshop is scheduled to be held in City Hall from 9am to 1:30pm on Saturday, June 15, 2019.

There is no registration requirement for this Workshop, so please make a note on your calendar and share the information with your friends. Also, see the League of Women Voters’ Facebook Event for the Workshop.

At the Workshop potential candidates, their campaign helpers, or others who are only thinking about running in the future, learn all about what the jobs entail, deciding and preparing to run, how to get elected, and what happens if/when you win. Each attendee is given a full printed ToolKit of information, including election requirements, the forms that have to be filed as well as many other resources for planning to make a run for the Assembly or School Board. State Election Early/Absentee Voting now available but NOT at City Hall!

Thanks to everyone who has stopped by the Clerk’s office to try to vote early in the State of Alaska November 6, 2018 General Election. We appreciate seeing how eager voters are to vote in the upcoming election!

Please note that City Hall is NOT an Early/Absentee Voting location, however, there are a number of options for those who wish to vote prior to the November 6 Election Day. Full details are available on the State of Alaska Division of Elections website at www.elections.alaska.gov or for Juneau specific locations, dates, and times, please click here.

October 2, 2018 CBJ Municipal Election now certified

It is with great pleasure that we announce the official certification of the October 2, 2018 Regular Municipal Election. The results of the election can be found under the October 2, 2018 links on the on the Clerk’s Election webpage at https://juneau.org/clerk/elections

The Municipal Clerk’s Office would like to extend its thanks and appreciation to all the candidates who were willing to run for office and extend special thanks to all the hard working election volunteers and staff who made this election possible!

The newly elected Board of Education (School Board) members will be sworn into office at a meeting to be held this evening at 6:00 p.m. in the Thunder Mountain Library. Newly elected Assemblymembers will be attending an Assembly Onboarding Training event at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 13 in the Assembly Chambers and they will be sworn into office at the Monday, October 15 Assembly meeting at 7:00 p.m. in the Assembly Chambers.
