Bypass postal delays and check your utility bill online

The City & Borough of Juneau is receiving a high volume of calls from utility customers who have not received their most recent bills in the mail yet. Please know that these bills were mailed out on November 27 via the U.S. Postal Service. Any concerns from customers about why their bill has not been delivered yet should be directed to the U.S. Postal Service.

In the meantime, all customers are able to check their account balance online at www.invoicecloud.com/cityandboroughofjuneauak. Once there, just click on the “Water/Sewer” button, enter your Customer Number as it appears on your monthly bills, and click “Search Invoices”. More information about how to view and even pay your utility bill online is available at the Utility FAQ page at juneau.org/engineering-public-works/utilities-division/faq. You can also sign up to receive your bill via email, so you know you will always receive it right away.

Please be aware that ongoing mail delays at the U.S. Postal Service may also result in late payments. Utility payments are counted as timely based on when they are received, regardless of when they were mailed, so if you are putting your payment in the mail, allow for possible delays. Avoid the mail altogether and pay online, or place payments in one of our dropbox locations at Superbear IGA, Foodland IGA, and outside the main entrance of City Hall on Heritage Way.

System-wide line flushing begins this week

Beginning this week, the City and Borough of Juneau Water Utility will begin flushing the water distribution system. Work is scheduled to begin downtown, working north to the hospital, crossing over to Douglas, then on to the Lemon Creek area, proceeding to the Valley, and then on out to the Tee Harbor area. This work will continue over the next two months.

Work will occur between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, and will be tentatively completed by October 31.

Customers may encounter water discoloration or minor disruptions in service. To clear the discoloration, first wait until the work crew leaves the area, then run the cold water tap (preferably in your bathtub) until the water runs clear.

Please watch for crews working in the roadway, use caution, and obey traffic controls. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Reminder: water & sewer utility rates increased July 1

Please be aware that utility rates increased effective July 1. The City and Borough of Juneau Assembly, in August of 2019 (Ord. 2019-31 & 2019-44), approved increases to both the water and sewer utility rates. The 2% rate increase will go into effect July 1. Find the new rates on the CBJ Utilities Division’s Current Utility Rates page at juneau.org/engineering-public-works/utilities-division/rates-flat.

Please expect these changes to your upcoming billing statements. All Bill-Pay customers will need to update their payment amount through their banking institution in order to stay current.

These increases help with inflationary cost increases. Revenue generated goes toward costs for operating and maintaining major water and wastewater infrastructure systems, debt financing from Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (ADEC) loans, and capital projects directed at aging infrastructure or regulatory compliance. The City and Borough of Juneau Assembly, in August of 2019 (Ord. 2019-31 & 2019-44), approved increases to both the water and sewer utility rates. The 2% rate increase will go into effect July 1. Find the new rates on the CBJ Utilities Division’s Current Utility Rates page.

Please expect the changes to your billing statements. All Bill-Pay customers will need to update their accounts to reflect the new rates in order to stay current.

Prohibited substances identified in CBJ sewer system

Today, Tuesday, February 13, the CBJ Wastewater Utility received reports of an unfamiliar substance passing through the sewer system. Upon investigation, the utility confirmed large amounts of a foam-like substance at the Mendenhall Wastewater Treatment Plant.

CBJ is now working to identify the source of the discharge. Anyone discharging prohibited materials to our sewer system should halt immediately.

Prohibited substances in the CBJ sewer system pose risks to human health and infrastructure, interfere with the waste treatment process, and jeopardize our fisheries and environment. The public should also be aware that discharging these materials is a violation of the CBJ Sewer Code (75.02.080).

Prohibited substances include any materials that might adversely affect human or ecosystem health, such as fuel, chemicals, flammable materials, and toxic substances. They also include any substance that could interfere with the wastewater treatment or conveyance systems, such as fats, oil, grease, and solids. See CBJ code 75.02.090 for a complete list.

CBJ has notified the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation of this event.
