Construction on Harris Street Begins May 10

The City and Borough of Juneau and Coogan Construction will begin work on the Harris Street Reconstruction Project on Wednesday, May 10. Work is expected to continue into September.

The project will reconstruct both Harris Street from 4th Street to 7th Street and 7th Street from Harris Street to Gold Street. Please follow all traffic control signage in this area as sections of the roads will periodically be closed to traffic.

The project includes replacement of the road base, sewer system, water system, and storm system, as well as new pavement, sidewalks, curb and gutter, and other miscellaneous work.

Revised Traffic Pattern on Calhoun Avenue Starting April 26

The Calhoun Avenue & W. 7th Street intersection will be closed to vehicle traffic beginning Wednesday, April 26, until approximately Wednesday, May 10. The closure is part of the Calhoun Avenue Phase II Reconstruction Project.

During this closure, Indian Street and a portion of W. 8th Street will be temporarily opened to two-way traffic. The contractor will reopen the Calhoun Avenue intersection as soon as possible to restore the typical traffic patterns.

Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout the project zone, including the Willoughby stairs and overpass. Updated maps will be provided as work progresses. Please obey all construction signage.

Basin Road Trestle Remains Open To Pedestrian Traffic Only

The Basin Road Trestle remains open to pedestrian traffic only due to structural damage from the January rock fall event. The Trestle is closed to vehicular traffic until structural repairs can be made.

Once construction work begins, the Trestle will be closed to pedestrian traffic during the contractor’s working hours to ensure maximum safety. It will be reopened outside those hours. There may be periods of full-time closure if work and impacts to structural conditions require it.

Advance notifications of closures and the contractor’s work schedule will be provided to make sure the public is informed of any changes to Trestle access.

The structural repair work is expected to be complete by mid-June, barring no material supply issues.

Calhoun Avenue Phase II Reconstruction To Begin April 3

Part of Calhoun Avenue will be closed to traffic beginning April 3 as CBJ and Admiralty Construction begin work on Phase II of the Calhoun Avenue Reconstruction Project. Work is expected to continue through July 2023.

The construction area will stretch from the intersection with W. 7^th Street (by the Governor’s Mansion) to the intersection with Main Street. (See diagram below for details.) The intersection of W. 7th and Calhoun will remain open except for a short closure to complete water line work. Dixon Avenue will be open to local traffic only and closed at the intersection with Calhoun Avenue.

Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout construction and the Juneau-Douglas City Museum will remain open to the public.

Work will take place Monday – Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Traffic control is subject to change and notification will be provided. Please watch for traffic control signs, road closures, construction equipment and personnel.

Major work items include the replacement of underground water and services, rehabilitation of storm and sewer structures, sealing and repairs to existing retaining walls, replacement of concrete curb, gutter and sidewalks, asphalt pavement roadway resurfacing and replacement of existing street lights.

CBJ Experiencing Area-Wide Street Flooding Conditions

Many areas in the Borough are currently experiencing flooding conditions. Heavy rain is melting a thick snow pack, greatly increasing runoff. Ditches that have been packed with snow and drains still covered with snow and ice are slowing the movement of water.

If you are aware of any drains in your neighborhood that are plugged, please help by opening them up as much as possible. Please do not park on or near drains, as CBJ crews may have to access them rapidly. Crews will try to respond as quickly as possible to the worst affected areas.

To locate storm drains in your neighborhood, visit CBJ’s parcel viewer at epv.juneau.org. Under “Departments” click the layer labeled “Streets,” then click the “Storm Drain” layer.
