For non-in progress crimes, file a police report online

Starting February 26, the Juneau Police Department will require people to file a report online when reporting certain non-in progress crimes (crimes not currently happening), including thefts, vandalism to property, frauds up to $5,000, and motor vehicle crashes without injuries and less than $5,000 vehicle damage. Online reporting allows officers and dispatchers more time to perform other priority services, like answering 911 calls, responding to crimes in progress, traffic enforcement and neighborhood patrols.

JPD introduced online reporting in 2007 to better meet the needs of the community. It provides a simple solution for people who need to make a police report, but don’t necessarily need to speak with a police officer. Online reporting allows the person reporting the crime to give as many detailed descriptions and as much information related to the incident as needed. Once the report is completed and verified by a JPD Dispatcher, a copy of the police report will be emailed to the person who made the report. Reports filed online are usually the quickest and easiest way to get a report for your insurance company. All reports filed online will be reviewed and assigned to an officer or investigator for follow-up if needed.

For other crimes not in progress, you will still need to call JPD at 586-0600 for police assistance:

  • Assault, rape, robbery, abuse, or domestic violence.
  • Any type of court order violation, such as restraining, stalking, or child custody.
  • Theft of firearms, vehicles, or license plates.
  • A breaking and entering (burglary) to your residence or business.
  • Frauds/forgeries over $5,000.
  • Motor vehicle crashes involving injuries or combined damages over $5,000.
  • Someone has been hurt or placed in fear.

All emergencies should be reported by calling 9-1-1.

For more information, contact Lt. Krag Campbell at 500-0637 or [email protected].

New JPD positions will expedite service, improve 911 response

The Juneau Police Department is adding two new positions in its Communications Center to ensure calls for emergencies and calls for service are addressed promptly and attentively. Two call takers will join 11 dispatchers and two dispatch leads. JPD is currently hiring for the call taker positions; the application period closes December 2.

Communications Center staff field 7,000 to 12,000 business-line phone calls per month. Twenty calls per hour – not including 911 calls – is common during a dayshift. Currently, callers experience frequent interruptions due to dispatchers multi-tasking between fielding incoming 911 calls and managing radio traffic while balancing non-emergency calls for service. Call takers will alleviate that by working during peak times of day to assist with the heaviest phone call volume. The goal of the positions is to provide better service to the public and responders by allowing dispatchers more opportunity to appropriately monitor and respond to radio requests from the field and manage 911 calls.

Common calls for service that call takers will field include theft of property, abandoned vehicles, parking complaints, bear activity, motor vehicle accidents, welfare checks, suspicious activity, trespassing, burglaries, alarm activations, and general requests for assistance or information.

For more information on the new JPD call taker positions or to apply, go to the job posting.

Pick up a safety reflective light at JPD for Halloween

Halloween is this Thursday, October 31, and the Juneau Police Department wishes to remind motorists that there will be more pedestrians on the street than normal. Please drive safely near pedestrians and watch for people running from house to house in neighborhoods.

Pedestrians are reminded to watch for motorists and cross streets at designated crosswalks if available. Pedestrians are advised to wear bright clothing, walk in groups, have adult supervision, and carry a light source. If trick or treating, do not enter a stranger’s house and do not accept rides from people without your parents’ permission. Only accept unopened store bought treats and inspect the treats in a well-lit area at home before eating them.

JPD has purchased some reflective lights that are available to the public for free, while supplies last. The lights can be picked up at JPD, anytime next Monday-Thursday, 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

JPD hopes that everyone has a safe and happy Halloween.
