Log rolling classes start at Augustus Brown Pool Oct. 24

You don’t have to be a lumberjack to enjoy the fun and fitness that comes with the increasingly popular sport of log rolling. Juneau Pools is now offering Log Rolling classes on Thursday nights, 7 to 8 p.m. starting October 24 at the Augustus Brown Swimming Pool. No sign up necessary. Participants must be eight years or older, and either pay a daily admission fee or be a pool pass holder to participate.

Perseverance Trail Partial Closure: October 22-23 (Weather Dependent)

Parks Maintenance personnel will be using heavy equipment to excavate the ditches and drainages on the lower Perseverance Trail from both trailheads to the metal fence. Weather dependent, this work is scheduled to be done on Tuesday and Wednesday (October 22-23) between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. each day.

Portions of the trail will be closed during excavation.  Access to the upper trail may be unavailable at times.  Trail users are urged to use caution when approaching the work area.  Please follow the direction of trail crew workers.

Juneau Glacier Valley Rotary PolioPlus 5K/1 Mile Fun Run Saturday, October 19

The Kaxdigoowu Heen Dei Trail/Brotherhood Bridge Trail is being used for the Juneau Glacier Valley Rotary PolioPlus Fun Run this Saturday, October 19th, from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.  The trail will remain open to the public during the run.

Harborview Elementary School Annual Zombie 5K /1 mile Fun Run Sunday, October 20

Savikko Park, Sandy Beach and the Treadwell Historic Trail area will be in use from 10 a.m. until approximately 2 p.m. on Sunday, October 20th, for the Harborview Elementary School Annual Zombie 5K/1 mile Fun Run. The park will remain open to the public during the event.

Deadline to submit workshop proposal for Coaches Summit extended to Oct. 14

The deadline to submit workshop proposals for the 2019 Coaches Summit: Connect. Play. Change The Game has been extended to Monday, October 14 at 4:30 p.m. The all-day summit provides a day of professional development and connection for youth coaches in Juneau and around Southeast Alaska. It’s happening November 9 at Juneau-Douglas High School: Yadaa.at Kalé, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The keynote speaker is John O’Sullivan, founder of the Changing The Game Project and author of several books on coaching youth sports.

Organizer Zach Gordon Youth Center is still looking for workshop presenters for the summit. Areas of interest include trauma-informed coaching, culturally responsive coaching, creating positive relationships with families, identifying substance abuse in youth, program management, behavior management, and inclusive coaching for youth with disabilities.

To present at the summit, submit a workshop proposal by Monday, October 14. Registration to attend the Coaches Summit is currently open.
