CBJ Harbormaster Matt Creswell recognized as Alaska Harbormaster of the Year

CBJ Harbormaster Matt Creswell recognized as Alaska Harbormaster of the Year

Statter Harbor Supervisor Jeremy Norbryhn named Juneau Harbor Employee of the Year

CBJ Docks & Harbors is very pleased to announce that Harbormaster Matt Creswell has been recognized by the Alaska Association of Harbormasters & Port Administrators (AAHPA) as the 2023 Alaska Harbormaster of the Year. AAHPA President Bryan Hawkins awarded the honor at its annual conference in Ketchikan on September 28.

“Juneau is fortunate to have a high caliber of harbor staff overseeing the needs of our waterfront,” said CBJ Port Director Carl Uchytil. “Harbormaster Creswell, leading the efforts, is an extremely competent public servant who is dedicated to providing exceptional harbor services as well as demonstrating the highest standards of integrity.”

Harbormaster Creswell, in receiving the award, noted, “I am thankful to be recognized for this honor but my appreciation is to the Docks & Harbors staff for their professionalism and support which led to this award.”

Creswell was cited for his management of Juneau’s $250 million port and harbor infrastructure and supervision of 50 personnel.  As a Facility Security Officer, he expertly coordinated 1.6 million cruise ship passengers to Juneau, exceeding the 2019 record and representing a 25% increase from 2022. He was also instrumental in a successful focused effort to ensure compliance with removal of derelict vessels and derelict vehicles throughout the harbors.

Creswell has achieved professional credentials from International Association of Maritime and Port Executives, Association of Marina Industries and is pursuing a Professional Port Manager certification through American Association of Port Authorities.  He has been a CBJ employee since 2016 and the Docks & Harbors Harbormaster since 2020.

Statter Harbor Supervisor Jeremy Norbryhn was also recognized during the AAHPA conference as the Juneau Harbor Employee of the Year.  Norbryhn’s leadership in managing Statter Harbor’s new for-hire-floats have resulted in efficient summer operations.  He was also key in the tedious process of renewing Docks & Harbors certification for Alaska Clean Harbors, which only two harbors statewide have achieved. The citation credited Norbryhn’s positive influence not only with the public but in the professional development of the Docks & Harbors staff.  He has been a CBJ employee since 2021.

Docks & Harbors To Host ASCE for Infrastructure Discussion May 17

As part of national Infrastructure Week events,  the City & Borough of Juneau Docks & Harbors will host local members of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) to discuss Alaska infrastructure.  Port Director Carl Uchytil, P.E. and ADOT bridge engineer Leslie Daugherty, P.E.  will present the results of the 2021 ASCE-Alaska Infrastructure Report Card at 12 p.m. on Wednesday, May 17, in the Assembly Chambers. The public is cordially invited to attend.

Infrastructure Week takes place in Washington, D.C. and throughout the country every May. For over a decade, industry advocates and practitioners, including ASCE, have organized this week-long series to spotlight the role infrastructure plays in supporting our economy and our quality of life.

The concept of a report card to grade the nation’s infrastructure originated in 1988 with the congressionally chartered National Council on Public Works Improvement report. Since then ASCE has updated the national report card every four years. With each new report – in 2001, 2005, 2009, 2013, 2017, and now 2021 – the methodology of the Report Card has been rigorously assessed so as to take into consideration all of the changing elements that affect America’s infrastructure. In addition to the national report, each state ASCE produces a statewide Report Card. This will be presented on Wednesday.

For more information, please contact Port Director Carl Uchytil at [email protected].
