Temporary Freeze on New CBJ Permit Applications December 11 to January 11

The CBJ Community Development Permit Center is excited to update their permitting system to a new, streamlined and 100% online program that will allow permit applicants to view their permit status in real-time. The center will be temporarily closed to new applications from Thursday, December 11, 2025 to Sunday, January 11, 2026 while the system is upgraded. Applicants will be able to submit again starting Monday, January 12 using the new software on juneau.org/community-development.

Currently, the Permit Center relies on email to exchange documentation and plans. The new permitting system will offer a more efficient process that allows applicants to:

  • Apply, view, and access all permitting applications, documents, and records at any time
  • Upload documents, communicate with permit review staff, and view permit status in real-time
  • Create templates for recurring application types
  • Receive and pay invoices online with a credit card

The Permit Center will continue to accept applications using the current system until 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, December 11. Permit Center staff will continue to process applications submitted on or prior to December 11 during the freeze. Any new applications sent to the permitting email during the permit freeze will not be processed and returned to the sender. New applications will need to be made through the new permitting system once the freeze is over.

While the application process will be fully online, Permit Center staff will still be available to answer applicant questions and provide assistance at [email protected] and (907) 586-0770.

JHI’s submitted Conditional Use Permit application (Case No. USE20250010) includes a proposal to construct a 280-foot-wide, 111-foot-high hydroelectric dam and associated infrastructure across the natural outlet of Sweetheart Lake in Gilbert Bay south of Juneau.  The northern extension of the proposed project would deliver hydroelectric power from the current terminus at the Lena Point Substation to Cascade Point, Echo Cove, and continue to Kensington Mine in Berners Bay. The Planning Commission will evaluate the proposed development for conformance with the CBJ Land Use Code.

The Planning Commission will consider two rezoning cases, an ordinance amending the Title 49 Land Use Code regarding reasonable accommodations, the Title 49 zoning map, and rules related to subdivisions on arterials at the October 28 meeting. The rezonings include changing 3.79 acres at 5200 and 5220 Commercial Boulevard from Industrial to Light Commercial (Case No. AME2025 0002); and upzoning 4.03 acres at 7170 Glacier Highway from D-18 to Light Commercial (Case No. AME2025 0003).
