Public invited to comment during Aug. 23 Assembly meeting on funding vote-by-mail facility in Juneau

The public will have an opportunity to weigh in on a vote-by-mail proposal during the Monday, August 23 Juneau Assembly meeting. The meeting starts at 7 p.m. Join online at https://juneau.zoom.us/j/91515424903 or call 1-253-215-8782 with Webinar ID: 915 1542 4903. The proposal is to renovate an existing City and Borough of Juneau facility – the Thane Warehouse – and purchase equipment to allow for locally hosted vote-by-mail municipal elections. Read the full agenda packet here.

Within the August 23 Assembly agenda is the introduction of Ordinance 2021-08(b)(am)(D), which would appropriate $700,000 of general funds to configure the Thane Warehouse as a ballot processing center, and fund the purchase and set up of election equipment to operate a locally hosted vote-by-mail election. The work is anticipated to be complete in time to conduct the 2022 municipal election at the new Juneau processing center. Last year and this year, the CBJ municipal vote-by-mail election has and will be hosted at the Municipality of Anchorage facility.

Again, the community is invited to submit public comment during Monday’s Assembly meeting. Community members can comment during the meeting in person (up to eight people will be allowed in the audience seats at City Hall), or through Zoom online (hit the ‘raise hand’ button), or over the phone (press *9 on your phone). Members of the public are also encouraged to email their comments in advance of the meeting to [email protected].

The public will have another opportunity to weigh in during the ordinance’s public hearing, happening at a later date.

Ahead of CBJ’s Oct. 5 Regular Election, make sure your ballot is mailed to the correct address

Are You Registered to Vote

On the anniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, the City and Borough of Juneau encourages residents to register to vote or – if you’re already registered to vote – check the mailing address associated with your voter registration in advance of the October 5 Regular Municipal Election. This election is being conducted by mail.

Register to vote online on the Alaska Division of Elections website. Sunday, September 5, is the final day to register to vote to participate in the October 5 election. Any youth who will turn 18 by Election Day can register to vote up to 90 days prior to their 18th birthday and will need to register no later than September 5 to participate in this year’s Regular Municipal Election.

If you’re already registered to vote, ensure CBJ has an accurate mailing address by going to the State of Alaska Division of Elections voter information website myvoterinformation.alaska.gov. Check and/or update your residence and mailing address so you can receive your ballot by mail.

If you would prefer to register to vote in person or update your voter registration information in person, you can do so at any of the following locations during regular business hours:

  • Municipal Clerk’s Office – City Hall Room 202 (155 S. Seward Street)
  • All three Juneau Public Libraries (Downtown, Douglas, Mendenhall Valley branches)
  • State of Alaska Division of Elections – Region I Office located in the Mendenhall Mall Annex
  • Zach Gordon Youth Center (396 Whittier Street)

For voters who will be traveling, heading off to college, or otherwise won’t be at your regular mailing address between September 14 and October 5, you can submit an application to have your CBJ Regular Election ballot mailed to an alternative temporary mailing address. Applications to vote at a temporary address are encouraged to be submitted no later than September 4 to be included in the initial ballot mailing and must be received by the Municipal Clerk’s Office no later than September 28. Ballots will not be forwarded.

For more information, contact the CBJ’s Municipal Clerk’s Office at 586-5278 and choose option 4, or go to the CBJ Elections webpage.
