Legislation coming up for Public Hearing at Assembly Meetings – including CBJ Budget, Mill Levy Ordinances & CIP Resolution

The following items are scheduled for public hearing by the City and Borough of Juneau Alaska Assembly, on the date(s) designated below.  The agenda and packet material for the meetings will be posted on the CBJ website at https://juneau-ak.municodemeetings.com/ by close of business the business day prior to the meetings.

The public may participate in-person or via Zoom webinar. Testimony time will be limited by the Mayor based on the number of participants. Members of the public that want to provide oral testimony via remote participation must notify the Municipal Clerk prior to 4pm the day of the meeting by calling 907-586-5278 and indicating the topic(s) upon which they wish to testify. For in-person participation at the meeting, a sign-up sheet will be made available at the back of the Chambers and advance sign-up is not required. Members of the public are encouraged to send their comments in advance of the meeting to [email protected]

Citizen Initiative Process Next Steps – Some Petition Books Issued, One Denied, and One Withdrawn.

The following are the dates to file a Citizen’s Petition Affidavit in advance of the October 1, 2024 Regular Municipal Election.

Initiative Petition Filing Period March 26 – April 9

Referendum Petition Filing Period April 9 – April 24

Charter Amendment Petition Filing Period March 29-May 13

In response to citizen petitions filed with the Municipal Clerk’s office in April, some petitions were approved and have been issued books, one was denied and one was withdrawn. Decisions and complete details for each petition can be found on the Municipal Clerk’s Elections webpage at https://juneau.org/clerk/elections.

Petitioner Committees for the Ship Free Saturday Initiative and the Repeal Ordinance 2023-24 Referendum petitions were issued petition books on Tuesday, April 30, 2024 and have until Thursday, May 30, 2024 at 4:30pm to collect 2,359 signatures and turn them into the Municipal Clerk’s office for consideration.

For voters who are interested in signing petitions but don’t know if they are a qualified Juneau registered voter, they can check their voter registration status on the State of Alaska Division of Election’s website at https://myvoterinformation.alaska.gov/.  For individuals who are not registered to vote or who want to update their voter registration, the State Division of Elections has a webpage for that too. https://voterregistration.alaska.gov/

In addition to being able to register online, voters can register in person at a wide variety of locations in Juneau including the Municipal Clerk’s Office, any of the CBJ Public Librarys, or the State Division of Elections offices. Questions related to local CBJ Elections, the petition, or voter registration process are encouraged to contact the CBJ Municipal Clerk’s office at 907-586-5278 or via email at [email protected]v.

Learn the basics of running for local office at free workshop on May 11

Have you ever thought about running for local office? This October, Juneau voters will elect several Assembly and School Board members—and one of them could be you.

CBJ and the Juneau League of Women Voters will host the ninth annual “How to Run for Local Office” workshop on Saturday, May 11, from 8:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the CBJ Assembly Chambers (155 S. Seward Street).

The workshop is designed to help educate and prepare people interested in running for local, municipal office or school board. Learn about what elected office entails, preparing for your run, how to get elected, and what happens when you win. Each attendee will receive a full toolkit of information, including legal forms, references, and other resources for a local campaign.

Apply for a CBJ Enterprise Board by May 31

The following Enterprise Boards and Advisory Board have seat openings due to vacancies and/or terms coming due. Those interested in applying should fill out an online application and mark which boards they are interested in. Upon receipt of an application the Clerk’s Office will email applicants advanced interview questions specific to each board.  The Clerk’s Office will schedule applicants who returned the advanced interview questions, in the time allotted, for a 10-minute interview with the full Assembly sitting at the Assembly Human Resources Committee. Interview dates/times are yet-to-be finalized for multiple evenings in mid to late June.

Applications will be accepted until 11:59 p.m. Friday, May 31 for:

  • Airport Board – two seats with terms running July 1, 2024 – June 30, 2027.
  • Docks & Harbors Board – three seats with terms running July 1, 2024 – June 30, 2027 & one seat for an unexpired term ending June 30, 2026.
  • Eaglecrest Ski Area Board – two seats with terms running July 1, 2024 – June 30, 2027 & one seat for an unexpired term ending June 30, 2025.

Interested in serving on one of the 30+ CBJ boards or committees? Applications stay on file for one year and are added to the appointment process as vacancies arise for the board or committee of interest.

The following are the dates to file an Initiative Petition or Referendum Petition Affidavit in advance of the October 1, 2024 Regular Municipal Election.

Initiative Petition Filing Period March 26 – April 9
Referendum Petition Filing Period April 9 – April 24

On April 9, 2024, the Municipal Clerk’s office received the below petition affidavit applications and are currently in the process of doing the legal review as set out in CBJ Charter Article VII and Section 29.10 of the CBJ Election Code.  Copies of resource and additional documents pertaining to each petition will be published as available.

The Municipal Clerk has 15 working days (no later than April 30, 2024) in which to certify each of the petitions submitted on April 9 or notify the intiative committee the grounds for denail.
