CBJ 10/1/2024 Election – Preliminary Unofficial Results Posted

ELECTION DAY, OCTOBER 1, 2024 – PRELIMINARY UNOFFICIAL RESULTS POSTED

Today, October 1, 2024, is Election Day for the CBJ Regular Municipal Election which is being conducted as a By-Mail/hybrid election. Voters were mailed ballots on September 12 and ballots began returning on September 13.

All the ballots that have been received through Monday, September 30 have undergone their initial review and those that were eligible for counting are included in today’s preliminary unofficial results. Those results are posted on the CBJ Elections webpage at https://juneau.org/clerk/elections.

The CBJ Elections team will continue to process the ballots cast on election day at both of the two Vote Centers, dropped off in one of Ballot Drop Boxes and mailed via the U.S.P.S. (postmarked by Election Day). A secondary set of unofficial preliminary results will be posted online on Friday, October 4 and again on Friday, October 11.

Part of the review process includes sending out cure letters to voters to ensure any missing information or signature remedies are addressed so those ballots can be approved for counting. Voters are encouraged to watch their mail and respond as soon as they receive a cure letter to make sure their ballot can be counted.

The Canvass Review Board will meet October 14 & 15 to review and certify the election. The official/final results will be posted online once the Canvass Review Board and Election Official certify the election on October 15. Certification may be delayed by up to 3 days on a case-by-case basis as may be required.

It is now time to vote in the 2024 CBJ Regular Municipal Election

Ballots for the 2024 Regular Municipal Election were mailed out on September 12 and have been arriving in people’s mail boxes since Friday, September 13. Voters have many options for returning their mailed ballots between now and Election Day, October 1st, including:

  • Voters may return their ballots by placing them in one of five secure ballot drop boxes (see below for locations); or
  • Voters may return their ballot by mail through the U.S. Postal Service using first class postage; or
  • Voters can get assistance in voting at one of the two Vote Centers (details below).

We encourage voters who want to vote at a Vote Center to beat the lines on Election Day and go to the Vote Center between now and September 30. Vote Centers will be open during this period prior to and including Election Day for any voters who need assistance or prefer to turn in their ballot in person.

Ballot Drop Boxes

Ballot drop boxes are available 24/7 starting September 13, 2024 to 8:00pm on Election Day, October 1, 2024. They are located at:

Need accessible voting options?

ADA and HAVA (Help America Vote Act)-compliant voting machines are available at Vote Centers starting September 16 through Election Day, October 1. These machines allow users to vote with an audio ballot and/or a tactile interface and are available to all registered voters.

If you did not receive a ballot in the mail and/or are unable to vote in person due to age, illness, or disability a personal representative may pick up a Special Needs ballot from one of the Vote Centers and deliver a ballot for you. Your personal representative can assist you in any step of the voting process with the exception of signing the voter certification. The personal representative can be anyone except for a candidate, one of the registered sponsors of a ballot petition, your employer, agents of your employer, or officers or an agent of your union. Special Needs ballots are available at both Vote Centers and must be returned to one of the Vote Centers by 8:00 p.m. AKST on Election Day, October 1.

Absentee Voting

If you will be absent from the mailing address on your voter registration during this time, or for any reason, you can still apply to either:

Receive your ballot as postal mail to a temporary address: Apply as soon as possible by filling out the 2024 Temporary Address Application form. The last day to apply to receive your ballot at a temporary address is Tuesday, September 24, 2024. Ballots returned through the mail must be legibly postmarked no later than Election Day, October 1, 2024 and received by the Clerk’s Office no later than the beginning of the Canvass Review Board process on Monday, October 14, 2024.

Receive an E-Ballot: Apply as soon as possible by filling out the 2024 CBJ Application for a Fax/E-ballot. Applications for fax/E-ballot must be received by the Clerk’s Office by 5:00 p.m. AKST Monday, September 30, 2024. Ballots returned by fax or email must arrive by 8:00 p.m. AKST on Election Day, Tuesday, October 1, 2024.

Is your voter information current for the October 1, 2024 Regular Municipal Election?

CBJ Elections are conducted as By Mail Elections. That means that all CBJ registered voters in active status with the State of Alaska Division of Elections, as of September 1, 2024 will be mailed a ballot for the October 1, 2024 Regular Municipal Election. Ballots will go in the mail on September 12 to the mailing address on file with the State of Alaska Division of Elections. Precinct polling places that are used in the State of Alaska elections will not be used during the CBJ Election. However, we will have a variety of methods by which you may return your voted ballot which include:

  • Taking them to a Vote Center (located at City Hall and the Mendenhall Public Library);
  • Dropping them in one of four official Ballot Drop Boxes (Located Douglas Public Library, Auke Bay/Statter Harbor boat launch parking lot, AEL&P, or outside City Hall); or
  • Returning your voted ballot by mail.

The deadline to register to vote or update your address for the October 1, 2024 Municipal Election is Sunday, September 1.  Register or update your address online through the State of Alaska Division of Elections or in person at: the City Clerk’s Office (City Hall, 155 Heritage Way), State of Alaska Division of Elections (9109 Mendenhall Mall Road Suite 3), or any of the Juneau Public Libraries. To check the status of your voter registration, go to the State of Alaska Division of Elections website https://myvoterportal.alaska.gov/ and follow the prompts to look up your voter registration location status. Will you be traveling during the election period and not able to receive your ballot at your regular mailing address? You can apply to have your ballot sent to a temporary address or to receive a ballot by fax or email. 2024 CBJ Temporary Address Application. Apply early! Applications received by Tuesday, August 27, will result in ballots mailed out on September 12th to the temporary address. The last day to apply to have your ballot mailed to a temporary address is Tuesday, September 24. Ballots returned through the mail must legibly postmarked no later than Election Day, October 1, 2024 and received by the Clerk’s Office no later than the start of the Canvass Review Board certification on Monday, October 14. 2024 CBJ Application for a Fax/e-ballot. Apply early! 2024 Municipal Election Candidate Filing Period Opens July 12

The 2024 City and Borough of Juneau Regular Municipal Election candidate filing period opens Friday, July 12 at 8 a.m. and closes Monday, July 22, at 4:30 p.m.

This fall, Juneau voters will elect a Mayor, two Assembly members and three Board of Education (School Board) members. Juneau residents are encouraged to consider this opportunity to serve the public and contribute to their community.

All candidate filings must be submitted in person at the Municipal Clerk’s office located on the second floor of City Hall (155 Heritage Way, Room 214). Candidates are encouraged to file as early as possible during the filing period to allow additional time to correct any insufficiencies in their paperwork.

Candidates running for office must complete a Declaration of Candidacy, a Nominating Petition, and an Alaska Public Offices Commission (APOC) Public Official Financial Disclosure form. These forms are available online at juneau.org/clerk/elections and must be filed with the CBJ Municipal Clerk’s Office during the filing period.

Declaration of Candidacy and Nominating Petition forms must be submitted to the Clerk in their original paper form (with original signatures and notarized); the Public Official Financial Disclosure form must be filed electronically on APOC’s website and a signed printed copy submitted to the Clerk. The Clerk’s Office cannot certify a candidate’s nominating petition without these three paper documents filed in the Clerk’s Office by the close of the filing period on Monday, July 22 at 4:30 p.m.

Candidates for office must meet eligibility criteria including voter registration and residency requirements. For detailed information, see the Declaration of Candidacy forms for MayorAssembly, or Board of Education. Eligibility criteria for Mayor, Assembly and Board of Education candidates differ, so please be sure to check the correct form.

Please note that candidates may only run for one elected office (Mayor, Assembly, or Board of Education) at a time.

The following seats are open in this election:

Mayor and Assembly

The Mayor’s seat will be open for a full three-year term. Candidates may reside anywhere in the City and Borough of Juneau.

One District 1 Assembly seat will be open for a full three-year term. Residents of Downtown Juneau, Douglas, North Douglas, Lemon Creek and the Airport area are eligible to run for District 1.

One District 2 Assembly seat will be open for a full three-year term. Residents of Mendenhall Valley and Out the Road are eligible to run for District 2.

Assembly members are term-limited to a maximum of three consecutive three-year terms, after which they must step down for a minimum of one year before they are eligible to run again for Assembly. All Juneau area voters may vote for all races on the ballot.

Board of Education

Three Board of Education seats will be open in this election. All Juneau voters may vote for up to three candidates.

Board of Education candidates may reside anywhere in the City and Borough of Juneau. There are no term limits for Board of Education members.

2024 Regular Municipal Election Information

The election will take place Tuesday, October 1. Ballots will be mailed to all registered voters on September 12, and voters are encouraged to return their ballot by mail or drop it off at a ballot drop box or Vote Center to avoid waiting in line on Election Day. The deadline to register to vote or update your voter information (including mailing address) is September 1.

Citizen Petitions: Initiative and Recall Petition News (7/2/2024)

On Monday, July 1, 2024, the Municipal Clerk’s office certified the Ship-Free Saturday Initiative and received the Supplemental Petition books submitted by the School Board Recall Petition Committee for the recall of School Board President Deedie Sorensen and Vice-President Emil Mackey.

Clerk staff will be reviewing the supplemental books for the recall petitions and have a final determination on sufficiency and certification no later than Thursday, July 11.
