As Marine Park Reconstruction Continues, Walkway Opens and Terrace Closes

July 8, 2026 – News

With the first few months of the Marine Park Rebuild complete, the park’s decorative walkway – which connects the end of the Downtown Seawalk to the Merchants Wharf plaza – is now open for pedestrian traffic and emergency access through the remainder of the summer season. The City and Borough of Juneau’s contractor for this project, Dawson Construction LLC, has moved fencing to incorporate the rest of the job site. Pedestrians should note that more of the Marine Park area, including the terrace to the south of the park, will be closed starting Wednesday, July 8.

Construction of Marine Park began in April this year and is set to complete in April 2027. In addition to the walkway, contractors have completed demolition on part of the park and will now continue demolition and set the concrete underlaying the rest of the park. The finished park will include an inlay of formline salmon designed by Rico Worl, a covered seating area and performing arts stage, two permanent vendor kiosks, and children’s play area.

This project began in 2023 after the City and Borough of Juneau received local feedback through over 1000 public survey responses and several public meetings. The Marine Park Rebuild is funded entirely by Marine Passenger Fees, which are constitutionally restricted to financing projects that benefit cruise ships and its passengers.
