Mendenhall River flooding update: DOT and National Guard demobilize

As the pace of the most labor-intensive recovery work slows, some of our partners are returning to their day jobs. After two non-stop weeks hauling debris, Alaska Department of Transportation crews and equipment stood down on Wednesday. That included equipment operators from around the state who traveled to Juneau to lend a hand hauling over 4000 cubic yards of debris.

The Alaska National Guard also demobilized yesterday after two weeks of support. A total of 60 service members took part in helping Juneau recover by cleaning and mucking out homes, delivering supplies, hauling debris, and providing transportation.

We are immensely grateful for the steadfast support of these organizations and the tremendous help they have provided to our community.

Debris Collection Will Slow Over Weekend, Return Monday

Over the past several days, the volume of disaster debris has significantly decreased. Starting today, collection efforts will be scaled down—but CBJ-manned crews will continue to do regular rounds as residents continue to clear their homes.

Collection will be limited over the upcoming weekend (August 24 & 25) and return at full strength on Monday, August 26.

Please continue to move your debris to the right-of-way for pick up.

Landfill Returns to Standard Hours Saturday

For those who’ve been hauling their own flood debris, please be aware that Friday, August 23 will be the last day to take advantage of expanded residential hours at the Waste Management (WM) Capitol Disposal Landfill. Starting Saturday, August 24, the landfill will return to standard hours, accepting residential customers on Saturdays from 8 a.m. – 12 p.m.

We appreciate WM’s cooperation in the wake of the flood to give our critically impacted residents access to the landfill.

Funding Available for School Clothing and Supplies

The Juneau and Mendenhall Flying Lions Clubs are offering emergency funding to families with school children impacted by the recent flooding. The funding is available to purchase school clothes and supplies.
