Flood watch in Juneau remains in effect Thursday afternoon through Friday evening

A flood watch in Juneau remains in effect from 1 p.m. this afternoon (Aug. 12) through Friday evening, according to the National Weather Service in Juneau. Rain is expected to become heavy late this afternoon through tonight. Storm total rainfall of 2 to 4 inches is expected at lower elevations, but higher elevations could see 4 to 7 inches Thursday through Friday. Most of the rainfall will fall between late Thursday afternoon and Friday morning.

With already saturated conditions, area rivers and streams will respond quickly to the heavy rates.

Mendenhall River near Auke Bay is forecasted to reach 9.94 feet late tomorrow (Aug. 13). Here are impacts:

• At 9.4 feet – The yards along View Drive will start to flood and cause minor flooding.
• At 9.69 feet – There will be 7 inches of water over the Skaters Cabin Road between Skaters Cabin and West Glacier Trailhead. Campsite 7 will be flooded as well as water flowing over the road between campsites 8 and 9 in the Mendenhall campground.
• At 10 feet – Water levels will inundate Mendenhall Campground with up to 3 feet of water covering low areas as well as up to 1.5 feet of water covering Skaters Cabin Road. Portions of West Glacier Trail will be impassable.
• At 10.4 feet – Significant flooding along the Mendenhall Lake area with more than 3 feet of water in places and the Mendenhall campground will be evacuated. Some homes along View Drive will have up to 3 ft of water in yards.

Montana Creek at Mendenhall Loop Bridge is forecasted to reach 15.07 feet tomorrow afternoon (Aug. 13). Here are impacts:

• At 15 feet – At this stage the river is bankfull at the gage and water starts to inundate adjacent undeveloped fields. Water begins flowing over the low water crossing on Montana Creek Road.
• At 15.5 feet – Flood stage, 3-6 inches of water at low water crossing on Montana Creek Road.

Jordan Creek is forecasted to reach 9.74 feet late tomorrow (Aug. 13). Here are impacts:

• At 9.2 feet – This is the stage when Jordan Creek is at bankfull and water will begin to inundate areas along the edges of the creek near Race Reality and Jordan Square.
• At 9.7 feet – Water will inundate the Jordan Square’s front and back parking lots, around Jordan Creek office condominiums with up to one foot of water. Some residential driveways will be flooded and cut off.
• At 10.5 feet – There will be some inundation of structures and roads near Jordan Creek with more than one foot of water. Some residential homes and commercial offices along the creek will see significant flooding.
