After the City and Borough of Juneau’s mask ordinance went into effect last week, CBJ has gotten some questions:

• What does the City and Borough of Juneau’s mask ordinance require?

All individuals must wear a mask or cloth face covering over their nose and mouth when they are indoors in public settings or communal spaces outside the home. This includes (but is not limited to) grocery and retail stores, restaurants, breweries, bars, buses, taxis, and other forms of public transportation when passengers are present, personal care facilities, child care facilities, and communal areas such as offices and elevators. • Why is CBJ requiring this?

Many people with COVID-19 do not know they have it and can unknowingly transmit the virus for 14 days, or possibly even longer. Studies also show that people tend to be the most contagious with the highest viral load several days before they show symptoms, or just when they begin to feel sick. The virus spreads by respiratory droplets. Masks can reduce the release of respiratory droplets into the air when someone speaks, coughs, or sneezes, including by people who have COVID-19 but no symptoms.

• Where can I get a mask in Juneau?

Masks and face coverings can be purchased in numerous large retailers and small businesses in Juneau, as well as online. Juneau residents in need can fill out this request form through the local volunteer group Masks for Juneau People. The group provides face coverings at no cost and accepts donations. Because this is a volunteer effort, the wait time to get your request may vary from one to two weeks.
