"Reverie" Recent Paintings by Rob Roys
Roys was born and raised in Alaska and attended the University of Alaska in Fairbanks and in Juneau. He is influenced by the Alaskan landscape, Alaskan Native Art, dreams, memories, music, and mythology. His work focuses on the aspects of living and growing up in Alaska: the isolation (both personal and cultural) the gloomy weather, and the short intense summers. He also finds inspiration in the characteristics of small communities where the past is often visible in the present.

\"Mailboxes: Portraits of North Douglas,\" a presentation by Pol Corvez
Pol Corvez will discuss his current exhibit at the Museum, ?North Douglas Highway Mailboxes,? as well as his career in photography. Born in Brittany, France, Pol Corvez began his interest in photography as a teenager. Corvez spent many years as a professional photographer and lecturer of photography at the University of Angers. Now retired, Corvez devotes most of his time to his photography projects, though he does still teach occasional workshops.
The inspiration for ?North Douglas Highway Mailboxes? occurred in the summer of 2011, when Corvez was staying on Douglas Island for a few days. As he drove along the North Douglas Highway, the variety of mailboxes astounded him, and he knew that he wanted to photograph them. Corvez considers the photographs to be ?portraits of the resident families, which show their various tastes for building and decoration, their originality, their leisures and hobbies, their favorite newspaper, even their philosophy, at times.?
This event is free, and doors will open at 6:45pm. There will be a question and answer session following the presentation. ?North Douglas Highway Mailboxes? will be on exhibit in the Museum?s Murray Gallery from January 6th-28th, with an opening reception on January 6th from 4:30-7:00pm.

Dan Fruits: New Works.
Dan Fruits, a Juneau artist, is a lifelong artist?he has been a potter, a printmaker, and a painter. In the last twenty years he has concentrated on painting. The urge to paint is constant for him and inspiration can come from a variety of sources: photographs, other paintings, a random idea, the view from the living room window. Since coming to Alaska in the 1970?s, the state has been his inspiration, and his experiences in Alaska are reflected in his art.
Jeff Brown's Masterpieces of Merriment.
Jeff Brown believes his ultimate mission in life is ?to make people happy and to make people laugh.? This collection of his humorous postcards put a unique spin on Alaskan reality. Jeff says, ?Many people look at a scene and marvel at its beauty. I look for the joke. . . I love puns and tongue-in-cheek humor, and lacking the ability to draw a straight line, I appreciate photography?s ability to adjust the viewer?s sense of reality and make them ask, ?Did this really happen?? Created in the 1980?s, he points out, ?The majority of these cards were produced before Photo-Shop, using scissors, glue-stick and a #2 pencil, along with a little imagination.? Next they travel to Haines where they will be on display at the Sheldon Museum and Cultural Center.
Day of Remembrance: The Empty Chair at the Valley Library
February 19, 1942, is the day President Franklin Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, leading to the forced removal of almost 120,000 Americans of Japanese ancestry living on the West Coast of the United States?most of them U.S. citizens?from their homes and into federal detention camps.
The Day of Remembrance is now an annual event held in cities across the country to keep the memory of this great injustice alive and to honor those who were impacted by this action of the US government that was in direct response to the bombing of Pearl Harbor by the Imperial Japanese Navy.
In Juneau, the City Museum has teamed up with the Public Library to reprise our 2014 exhibit The Empty Chair: The Forced Removal and Relocation of Juneau's Japanese, 1941-1951 which was mounted in conjunction with the installation of the Empty Chair Memorial at Capital School Park.
The program begins at 5:30 pm on February 19th, in the Mendenhall Valley Library's meeting room. Greg Chaney's documentary film The Empty Chair will be shown and then, after a short break for conversation and refreshment, a selection of stories, images and objects from the Museum exhibit and the memorial dedication will be shared in slide-lecture format. The program will conclude at 7:30 pm.
Join us for one or both of these program components on February 19th, the Day of Remembrance. For more about The Empty Chair Memorial visit https://emptychairproject.wordpress.com.
KINETIC: A Solo Exhibit of Paintings by Avery Skaggs
Avery Skaggs's work is about capturing the expression of his movement through different art mediums. Skaggs, a REACH client who works through the Canvas Art Studio and Gallery, experiences cerebral palsy and is quadriplegic. He is supported in his art making by the staff there who provide the materials and tools to facilitate his process. The goal of Avery?s support team is to ensure that the final pieces capture the exuberance and immediacy of his mark making.
Avery was born and raised in Juneau and began exploring paint as soon as he could sit upright, an undertaking he has continued throughout his life. Since joining the Canvas in 2009, he has worked in many mediums, including paint, glass, monoprints, and ceramics.
The work on display in the Museum exhibit is an exploration of Avery?s mark making. The intent is to capture his kinetic movement and his physical expression, both subtle and bold. Each piece engages Avery?s energy which is at times close and contained to small hand gestures and at other times broad and reaching, sweeping across the canvas. The final outcome is a representation of Avery?s physical presence as captured over the course of days and months of work on each piece.
The opening reception for Kinetic will be on Friday, February 5th from 4:30-7:00pm. The exhibit will be on view through Saturday, February 27, 2016. Avery and his support team will do a public presentation on the topic of his art making and life as an exhibiting artist on Saturday, February 20th, from 10:30 am to 12 noon.
Local Heroes Walking Tours
In tandem with the Juneau Public Libraries summer reading program, ?Every Hero Has a Story?, the Juneau-Douglas City Museum is hosting a series of free child-friendly historic downtown walking tours. The first of these happens Saturday, June 6th, from 10 to 11:30 am. Subsequent tours take place at the same time on June 27, July 18 and August 22.
Beginning at the City Museum, children and their adult partners will hear stories of people who have made an impact on the Juneau community as the group walks around the downtown neighborhoods. Participants will meet people like Lee Hing, better known as ?China Joe?, who generously gave to people in need and is credited with saving many miners from sure starvation, and will hear about Mary Joyce, truly a woman ahead of her time, who claims the descriptors nurse, dog musher, lodge owner, radio operator and bush pilot, to name a few. There will be stories of Shell Simmons? daring rescues in his float plane, Elizabeth Peratrovich?s heroic testimony before the Alaska Senate during the 1945 debate over the Anti-Discrimination bill, and more.
Each tour is limited to 10 participants and adults must be accompanied by a child. Children over the age of 12 may participate without an adult partner. The program is free, but pre-registration is required to confirm a spot. Call 586-3572 or stop by the Museum to register for one of the tours.
