This is only a drill: Juneau Airport to conduct disaster exercise July 20

July 18, 2019 – News

The Juneau International Airport is conducting a full-scale simulated aircraft emergency disaster exercise at the airport on Saturday, July 20, 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. It will involve many emergency response agencies and volunteers roleplaying as injured passengers in a simulated aircraft accident. The public should keep in mind this is only an exercise and not a cause for alarm. The exercise will not disrupt normal airport operations or scheduled flights.

The exercise will take place in the runway area. Several City and Borough of Juneau entities, including Capital City Fire/Rescue, Juneau Police Department, and Bartlett Regional Hospital, as well as outside agencies, like Red Cross, are participating. The exercise will involve increased activity on the airport grounds, like emergency and airport vehicles with flashing lights and sirens. The exercise may involve a live burn simulated fire that could generate a temporary cloud of black smoke.

The parking lot of the Airport Dike Trail/Emergency Vehicle Access Road will be closed on July 20 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. to accommodate parking for volunteers taking part in the exercise. The trail will remain open.
