These are trying times. Send someone a letter of encouragement.

September 2, 2020 – FYI

With COVID-19 restrictions in place, many people are socializing less with friends and loved ones this year. For this reason, the Juneau-Douglas City Museum is extending its annual Dr. Walter Soboleff Day letter writing event. Dr. Walter Soboleff Day is November 14 but starting this month, you can visit the City Museum for a free notecard, US postage, and an insert honoring Dr. Soboleff to use for mailing letters of gratitude, encouragement, or support to someone in your life. Those who knew Walter Soboleff remember his frequent handwritten notes and cards. The City Museum will have cards and supplies available through the end of November.

Walter Alexander Soboleff (November 14, 1908 – May 22, 2011) spent his life working with people, with the goal of higher education, self-respect, spiritual values, tolerance, and equality. Dr. Soboleff was an influential member of the Juneau community and throughout Alaska. Of Tlingit and Russian-German descent, he contributed to many organizations, including serving in all of the offices of the Alaska Native Brotherhood Grand Camp, participating in the Juneau Lions Club, teaching Native Cultural Studies at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, serving in the AK National Guard, and his lifetime avocation as Presbyterian pastor for the Juneau Memorial Church and as a traveling preacher.

The City Museum is open Thursday-Sunday from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. All visitors are required to wear masks. Admission is free during the month of September thanks to a generous donation from the Friends of the Juneau-Douglas City Museum.
