The library wants everyone in Juneau to read the same book

Juneau Public Libraries is giving away free copies of the book “In the Heart of the Sea” – while supplies last – as part of the National Endowment for the Arts Big Read program. The goal is to broaden our understanding of our world, our communities, and ourselves through the joy of sharing a good book. In partnership with several local and statewide organizations, book discussions and free programs are happening throughout October. The kickoff event is tomorrow, October 4, 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Alaska State Museum.

With NEA grant funding, the library purchased more than 200 physical copies of “In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex” by Nathaniel Philbrick. The library also has three audiobooks and five ebooks, including one in Spanish. To get a free copy while supplies last, go to any Juneau Public Libraries branch and ask for a copy. When you’re done with the book, you can keep it, return it back to the library to pass on, or pass it on yourself.

The October 4 kickoff event includes a reception at 4:30 p.m. followed by a discussion at 6 p.m. featuring poet Ishmael Angaluuk Hope, novelist Don Rearden, and moderator Corinna Cook.

Book discussions are happening at the:

• Douglas Library, Wednesday, Oct. 16, 6-7 p.m.
• Valley Library, Wednesday, Oct. 23, 6-7 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 26, 11 a.m. – 12 p.m.
• Downtown Library, Wednesday, Oct. 30, 6-7 p.m. and Thursday, Oct. 31, 12-1 p.m.
