Special Assembly Meeting on COVID-19 issues tonight at 6 p.m.

At tonight’s 6 p.m. Special Meeting, the City and Borough of Juneau Assembly will hold three public hearings on legislation related to COVID-19:

  • A resolution authorizing the Manager to execute an agreement with the State of Alaska to accept CARES Act funds

The State of Alaska allocated $53 million to the City & Borough of Juneau from the federal CARES Act. This resolution would authorize the Manager to execute any necessary grant agreement with the State for the City & Borough of Juneau to receive the CARES Act funding.

  • An emergency appropriation resolution appropriating up to $1,057,000 to the Manager for a COVID-19 Child Care Relief Program; funding provided by the CARES Act Special Revenue Fund

This resolution would provide grant funding to licensed childcare providers that serve infant through preschool aged children to offset additional cleaning, staffing, and facility costs as they reopen. The Association for the Education of Young Children (AEYC) will administer the grant program.

  • An emergency ordinance requiring the use of cloth face coverings on Capital Transit buses and in certain areas of CBJ facilities open to the public

This ordinance requires CBJ to post a sign when a cloth face covering is required in a CBJ owned facility and requires CBJ to provide cloth face coverings to people who do not have one. This ordinance creates exemptions, for example, for children and for people with disabilities. If a person refuses to wear a cloth face covering and the person is not exempt, CBJ may deny the face-to-face service or transit ride. A person can seek an accommodation through the City Manager’s Office.

The Assembly will also hear updates and discuss local mitigation efforts, out-of-state travel quarantine, and small cruise ships. Read the full agenda packet here.
