Sister Cities event on May 8 celebrates Russian culture & Victory Day

April 29, 2019 – FYI

Drink tea and immerse yourself in Russian culture during the Victory Day Tea Celebration on May 8, 6-8 p.m. at the Northern Tea House. The event, which mirrors a similar celebration happening in Vladivostok, Russia, is hosted by the City and Borough of Juneau Sister Cities Committee.

The Advanced Russian class from Thunder Mountain High School will perform a play, Juneau residents Erika Bergren and Henry Melville will each recite some themed poetry, and a member of the Sister Cities Committee will provide a history lesson on Victory Day. The event programming is free; Northern Tea House will be open for business, so tea and snacks will be available for purchase.

The committee hopes the event can help unify the local Russophone community and honor a holiday that’s special to many in Juneau. The celebration is also meant to reciprocate the kind gesture by the City of Vladivostok’s sister cities committee when it held an American Independence Day celebration last year on July 4th.
